IN FRONT OF A MIRROR Examine with breast with arms down. Examine breast and armpits with raised arms. Place your hands on your hips to engage the muscles 4

IN FRONT OF A MIRROR Start off by standing in front of a mirror and look for any visible changes, i -e: Changes in size & shape Dimpling or puckering of skin/nipple Persistent rash / changes in skin around nipple Nipple inversion, retraction, bleeding or discharge Skin redness or soreness Accentuated veins on the surface Unusual swelling of one of the upper arms 5

EXAMINATION WHILE LYING DOWN To feel for the changes in the breast, underarm and collar bone areas more accurately, do the self breast examination lying down as, the breast tissue expands and spreads out evenly when lying down. This makes it easier for the examiner to feel for any lumps or distinctive changes in the breast tissue. 7

8 Lie on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder and your right hand under your head. Follow a pattern to ensure that you cover your whole breast during the examination. With the pads of your 3 middles fingers, you can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can move your fingers vertically un and down in rows.

9 This vertical up & down approach seem to work best for most women. Ensure to feel and examine all the breast tissue, from front to back. For the skin and tissue underneath, use light pressure during the sel f examination. For the tissue in the middle of your breast, use medium pressure. For deeper tissue in the back, use firm pressure.
