What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast cells grow out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer. The kind of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer.

Early Signs of Breast Cancer

Why is this important? About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Breast self-examination makes women more "breast aware", which in turn may lead to an earlier diagnosis of breast cancer.

How to perform visual a BSE: Stand in front of the mirror Arms relaxed at sides Hands on hips Raise arms above head Bend forward

How to perform physical BSE: Common places: shower, lying down Move the pads of your fingers in an up and down or circular pattern. Then feel above and below the collarbone and the underarm areas for swelling.

How Often Should I Do a BSE? Exam should be done every month 5 to 10 days after your period
