SUPERCOMPUTERS Essential English – pEN0055

Definition of a Supercomputer A computer which has the capability to :- Perform complex calculations in the extreme scale. Solve a single large problem in the shortest amount of time. G enerate a real world scale simulation of events.

Size of a Supercomputer Occupy a floor area as big as anywhere between one to two soccer fields. Fujitsu’s K Supercomputer IBM’s Blue Gene Supercomputer

Speed of a Supercomputer Faster than you could imagine. FLOPS (Floating Point Operations per Second ) or instructions per second is used to measure the speed of a supercomputer. In terms of scale, supercomputer is about 100,000 times faster than an average desktop computer. In terms of numbers, supercomputer is designed to process instructions at the rate of a whopping 50,000,000,000,000,000 instructions per second (50 petaFLOPS ).

Usage of a Supercomputer Computational Science Quantum mechanics. Weather forecasting. Oil & gas exploration. Physical simulation. Nuclear weapons detonation. Nuclear fusion.

Top 2 Fastest Supercomputers Tianhe-2 Located in National Super Computer Center in Guangzhou, China. Peak performance: 54 petaFLOPS . Cray Titan Situated in Oak Ridge National Laboratory in United States. Peak performance: 27 petaFLOPS . Tianhe-2 Cray Titan
