Genus : Alternaria
Species : A. melongenae

Symptoms
•Cracks appearing in leaf spots.
•Cause the characteristic leaf spots with concentric
rings.
•The spots are mostly irregular, 4-8 mm in diameter
and may coalesce to cover large areas of the leaf
blade.
•Severely affected leaves may drop off.

•A. melongenae also infects the fruits causing large
deep-seated spots.
•The infected fruits turn yellow and drop off
prematurely.

Pathogen

•Alternaria produces dry
spores, conidia bottle
shape.
•Muriform

Pathogen description
•The mycelium is dull brown and septate, pale grey
yellow conidiophores which are straight or curved.
•The conidia are light olive coloured with
transverse and longitudinal septa.
•There are around 3-5 septate and conidia are in
chain over short conidiophore.

Favourable condition
•Low temperature (20°-25°C).
•High relative humidity.
•Cloudy weather.

Spread of disease
•The fungus is seed-borne and also soil-borne as it
remains dormant in infested plant debris.

Management
•Spraying 1% Bordeaux mixture or 2 g Copper
oxychloride or 2.5 g Zineb / litre of water.
•Removal and destruction of affected plant parts and
spraying the affected plants with Bavistin (0.1%)
