UNIT 2:
BUILDING AN
ENVIRONMENT

Encourage a positive group
dynamic to make these team’s
as effective as possible
According to Queen’s University
of Charlotte, nearly 3 in 4
employers rate teamwork and
collaboration as ‘very
important’.

When people interact within the group in a
positive manner, the group will work well
together with a high rate of effectiveness.
Bad group dynamics can undermine the
success of the team, create a negative
work environment, and decrease morale.

THE TERM POSITIVE SUPPORT REFERS TO STRATEGIES AND
PRACTICES THAT ARE:
✓ PERSON-CENTERED IN NATURE, SENSITIVE TO THE UNIQUE CULTURES
AND BACKGROUNDS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL
✓ EVIDENCE-BASED OR PROMISING PRACTICES;
✓ ADAPTED AND IMPROVED OVER TIME USING ASSESSMENT
PROCESSES TO GUIDE USE; AND
✓ OFTEN IMPLEMENTED WITH MORE THAN ONE EVIDENCE-BASED.
POSITIVE SUPPORT

Types
• Belonging
Inclusion in a group
• Emotional support
Expressing caring and concern for one another.
• Informational support
Providing advice and guidance
• Instrumental support
Providing tangible resources
• Spiritual support
Addressing issues of meaning and purpose.
OTHER SOCIAL SUPPORT

The Benefits of a Positive Team
• Positivity can make a real difference
to our success and well-being.
• Positivity increases our ability to think
creatively, progress in our careers, cope
with challenges and work with other
people.
• Positivity reduces absenteeism and
staff turnover and leads to more satisfied
and productive teams.

HOW TO BUILD
A POSITIVE
TEAM?

Teams often become more motivated
when they have a positive leader.
Martin Seligman, a leading positive psychologist,
developed the PERMA model to highlight the five
essential elements that we all need to make us
happy.
Become a Positive

POSITIVE

ACCOMPLISHMENT/
ACHIEVEMENT

"Roadblocks" can quickly undermine your
team members' progress and reduce their
motivation
Before you can really boost
positivity in your team, you need to
remove the things that stand in its
way.
2. Remove Obstacles
to Positivity

CREATE MISSION AND
VISION STATEMENTS.
Manage Positively
WRITE A TEAM CHARTER THAT DEFINES EACH PERSON'S ROLE,
THE TEAM'S AIMS, AND YOUR OWN EXPECTATIONS.
USE MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVES TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR
TEAM'S GOALS ALIGN WITH THOSE OF YOUR ORGANIZATION.
MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TEAM MEMBERS' GOALS ARE REALISTIC, AND
REWARD PEOPLE APPROPRIATELY WHEN THEY ACHIEVE THEM
COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY.
BUILD POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS IN
YOUR TEAM.

Reinforce
Positivity
is a habit, and the best way to
cultivate it in your team is to
reinforce it daily. This takes
focus and self-discipline; the
following suggests on how to
cultivate it.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
PEOPLE ARE AT THEIR MOST CREATIVE, ENERGETIC, AND
PRODUCTIVE WHEN THEY'RE PART OF A HAPPY, POSITIVE TEAM.
THERE ARE FOUR STEPS THAT WE CAN CONSIDER TO FOLLOW TO
BUILD A POSITIVE TEAM:
1. BECOME A POSITIVE LEADER. USE THE PERMA MODEL TO
IDENTIFY THE FIVE THINGS THAT YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE TO MAKE
YOU HAPPIER, AND WORK ON SATISFYING THESE NEEDS.
2. REMOVE OBSTACLES TO POSITIVITY. FIND OUT WHAT CAUSES
DISSATISFACTION IN YOUR TEAM. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR
WORKING ENVIRONMENT IS SAFE AND HEALTHY, AND THAT YOUR
PEOPLE HAVE THE RESOURCES THEY NEED.

3. Manage positively. Create a mission statement,
set realistic goals that align with your
organization's objectives, and foster good
relationships within your team
4. Reinforce positivity. Build trust and confidence
every day, deal with negative behavior as it arises,
and remind your people of the positive impact of
their work.

Social Pressure
or Group
Pressure

The social group's pressure on an individual—peer pressure
(PP)—has attracted the attention of scholars in a variety of
disciplines, spanning sociology, economics, finance,
psychology, and management sciences.
Groups influence individual decision-making processes in a
variety of ways, such as:
•groupthink
•groupshift
• deindividuation.

Individual behavior and decision-making can be
influenced by the presence of others. There are both
positive and negative implications of group influence on
individual behavior. However, the influence of groups on
the individual can also generate negative behaviors. Peer
Pressure is influence wielded by people within the same
social group.

Peer pressure - is commonly thought of in a negative
light, but in reality, it's not always a bad thing.
Sometimes peer pressure is used to positively influence
people. Learning about acceptable group norms can be
a positive part of learning how to live with and socialize
with other people. Natural leaders tend to be less
susceptible to bad forms of peer pressure, while
followers may be more inclined to go along with it.

DETERMINANT OF
STRENGTH OR PRESSURE
IN GROUP

THE POWER THAT GROUPS HAVE IN SHAPING INDIVIDUAL
AND SOCIETAL WORLDS IS AN ADVANTAGE IN
ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE INITIATIVES, IF CHANGE AGENTS
HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE KEY COMPONENTS OF
GROUP DYNAMICS AND HOW THEY AFFECT THE OUTCOME OF
CHANGE EFFORTS.
INFLUENCE IS A KEY COMPONENT IN GROUP DYNAMICS,
BECAUSE IT IS THE CATALYST FOR THE DYNAMIC THAT THE
GROUP ADOPTS. THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION IS INFLUENCED
BY INTERNAL GROUPS THAT INTERSECT BECAUSE THEY
BRIDGE EACH OTHER’S KNOWLEDGE GAPS AND EXPAND
GROUP MEMBERSHIP THROUGH INTEGRATION.

According to Festinger, group
pressures toward the uniformity of
opinion have the function to
preserve social reality (i.e., the
reality built and shared by the
members, as a reference point and a
way to identify themselves with the
group).

Decisions in groups trying to reach
consensus are frequently influenced by a
small proportion of the group who guides
or dictates the behavior of the entire
network. In this situation a group of
leaders indicates and/or initiates the route
to the consensus and the rest of the group
readily follows their attitudes. The
conformity created through influence and
the pressure for social solidarity fosters
an interconnectedness between agents
within a group.
