MOTIVATION Knowing each other!   Break the group into two person teams(have them pick a partner that they know the least about). Have them ineterview each other for about 10 minutes. They need to learn about what each other likes about their family, relatives, political affilliations . After the interview, reassemble the teams and have each team member introduce their partner to the entire group. This activity will help them to learn about each other.

UNDERSTANDING CULTURE SOCIETY AND POLITICS: Week 2, Q2 KINSHIP, MARRIAGE AND THE HOUSEHOLD

Kinship ( kaugnayan ng magkamag-anak ) It is a social institution that refers to relations between members of the society. Descent ( pinagmulan ng angkan ) It refers to the origin or background of a person in terms of family or nationality

Kinship defined by either Consanguinity or by Affinity Consanguinity kinship through bloodline Affinity Kind of kinship that is formed out of marriage or ritual

Principles of Descent: Unilineal Descent Usually traced through a single lineof ancestors either from the patrilineal or matrilineal descent but not both. Consanguinity kinship through bloodline Affinity Kind of kinship that is formed out of marriage or ritual

Principles of Descent: Patrilineal afiliates a person with a group of relatives through his or her father. Matrilineal afiliates a person with a group of relatives through his or her mother

Principles of Descent: 2. Bilateral Descent used to categorized those children that are made members of all ancestors group of both parents, all grandparents, etc.

Types of Kinship Consanguineal kinship or based on blood it is considered as the most basic and general form of relations. The relationship is achieved by birth or by blood affinity. It is commonly called as relatives by blood. Examples are the relationship or connection between parents and their children, between siblings, between nephews / nieces and aunts/uncles.

Types of Kinship 2. Affinal kinship or based on marriage refers to the type of relations developed when a marriage occurs. The husband forms new relations with his wife and her family. Likewise the wife forms new relations with his husband and his family.

Marriage across culture   1. Endogamy or compulsory marriage it refers to marriage within their own clan or ethnic group 2. Exogamy or out-marriage it refers to the marriage outside their own clan or ethnic group 3. Monogamy refers to a marriage where an individual has only one spouse at a time

Marriage across culture   4. Polygamy refers to marriage of having more than one spouse at a time. It can be: Polygyny – the marriage of one man having multiple female partners at the same time or Polyandry – the marriage of one woman having multiple male partners at the same time

Marriage across culture   Others : Group Marriage – several men and women are married and have the same sexual access to each other Fictive Marriage – happens by proxy to represent someone not physically present in order to establish a social status for spouse and heirs, to control rights to property in the next generation

Marriage across culture   Kinship is also possible through ritual or ceremonial in the Philippines of Latin America through   Compradrinazgo – the godparent complex Padrinazgo – ritual link between god parent and god children Compadrazgo – ritual ties binding adults(god parents and natural parents)  

Post – Assessment In a ½ sheet of paper, answer the following questions. 1. Is monogamy the ideal practice of marriage relationship in the Philippines? Is Polygamy or polyandry anImmoral act in the Southeast Asia? 2. Why do some men and women allow their self to become a polygamy or polyandry?
