BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Outline of the presentation Introduction to Building Construction Types of Buildings Construction Materials Foundations Systems Structural Systems Building Services Sustainability in Building Construction Summary

Introduction to Building Construction The building process begins with a client who owns a building site. The client hires experts who will carry out the building design and construction. The client may be a private individual or a commercial organization. A building must be stable, durable, sanitary and fire resistant. Buildings do not exist in isolation, we suppose to be carefully consider the contextual forces that a site presents in planning the design and construction of buildings

Types of Buildings i . Residential buildings ii. Commercial buildings iii. Industrial buildings iv. Institutional buildings

Construction materials Common materials used in construction are concrete , steel and Timber Concrete > It have high compressive strength, making it ideal for foundations and heavy structures. It resistant to fire, chemicals and weathering. Steel > It have high tensile strength, providing excellent support for loads and are resistant to corrosion with proper treatment. Timber > It have a good tensile and compressive strength. Can be used as structural member and also used to hold the concrete when poured in different shapes.

Foundations systems Foundation is the lower most part of the building, it transfers the load of the building to the ground. Foundation systems are classified into two broad categories i . Shallow foundations :- Are used to the areas which have high bearing capacity ii. Deep foundations:- Are used to the areas which have low bearing capacity. Functions of the foundation . There are several functions of foundations the following g are some of the functions. To anchor the building to the ground under lateral loads. It prevents the building from overturning due to lateral forces. Distribute the load from the structure to soil evenly and safely.

Structural systems A structure is the body of the connected parts that is designed to bear loads. Types of structure systems. > Load bearing structures :- These are structures in which walls serve two functions that is defining the spaces and carrying all the imposed loads. > Framed structures :- These are structure in which all the imposed loads are supported by structural elements i.e. columns, beams and slabs.

Building services Building services encompass the essential systems and processes that ensure the functionality, safety and comfort of a building. These services integrate advanced technologies and infrastructure to provide efficient heating, ventilation, air condition, plumbing , electrical systems, fire safety, and more.

Sustainability in building construction Sustainable building construction minimizes environmental impact and promotes ecological balance. Energy Efficiency: Utilizing energy efficient materials and systems to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Water conservation: Implementing systems for efficient water use, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater recycling.

Summary Building Construction : Essential for society development. Building Types: Residential, commercial, industrial and institutional. Materials: Concrete, steel and wood are crucial for construction. Foundations : Shallow and deep, vital for structural support. Structures : Load- bearing, steel frames, reinforced concrete. Services: Plumbing, electrical, HVAC- integral to design. Sustainability : Eco- friendly materials and energy- efficient designs.
