Bus
Topology
By: Tim Yenko
-Network Topology in which all devices are
connected to a single cable or bus.
Bus
Topology
- Serves as a shared communication medium,
which allows all connected devices to receive
signal/data simultaneously.
-uses Coaxial Cable
(Backbone Cable).
-Uses Drop cable to
connect to computers.
-Uses Bayonet Neill–
Concelman (BNC)
connectors and plugs.
-Uses Terminators.
Bus topology
Parts used for
bus topology
-Coaxial Cable/Backbone Cable - Main connection, path for all the
devices included in the topology/network (Commonly RG08 Coaxial is
used). (RG stands for Radio Guide)
- Drop Cable - links the computers to the Backbone Cable. (Rg58
Coaxial)
-BNC female connector - Serves as a conjunction for terminator.
-BNC male connector - connects drop wire to computer through BNC
port.
-T-Connector - links drop wires to the bus/Backbone Cable.
-Terminators - atatched at each end of the bus to prevent signal
reflection.

Characteristics
of bus topology
D. Germany
D. Germany
-all devices are connected to a same
communication channel.
-communication channel is shared by all
devices in the network.
-data is broadcast to all devices connected
to the bus, but only accepted and processed
by its intended recipient.
Advantages
Advantages
- Easiest Topology to set up
- Much more efficient for small networks
- Easy removal of nodes without affecting
other nodes
- Cost effective than Mesh and Star topologies
- Easily expandable by joining two cables
together
DisAdvantages
DisAdvantages
- Limited Bandwidth: Heavier data transfers
may slow down communication between
nodes
- Easily susceptible to malfunction if bus is
damaged
- Slower compared to other topologies
- More Nodes = Slower Network
- Hard to Troubleshoot
