CARLO J. CAPARAS

CARLO J. CAPARAS Carlo J. Caparas (March 12, 1943 – May 24, 2024) was a prominent Filipino comic strip creator, writer, film director, and producer. He is best known for creating iconic Filipino superheroes and comic book characters, as well as for his work in the film industry.

•Born in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan, Caparas was one of nine children in a family facing economic challenges. To support his family and education, he took on various jobs, including working as a water carrier, boatman, construction laborer, and factory worker. His passion for reading and storytelling emerged during these formative years.

• Caparas made significant contributions to Filipino pop culture, especially during the golden age of comics from the 1960s to the 1980s. He wrote over 800 novels and short stories for comics, some of which were later adapted into films and television series.

In the 1980s, Caparas expanded his creative pursuits to the film industry, directing and producing numerous films. He co-founded Golden Lion Films International with his wife, Donna Villa. They became known for producing “massacre films,” which were based on true crime stories and often completed rapidly to capitalize on public interest. Some of his notable films include: • The Myrna Diones Story • The Maggie dela Riva Story • Lipa ‘Arandia’ Massacre Caparas wrote and directed over a hundred screenplays throughout his career.

Caparas was married to Donna Villa, with whom he had two children, CJ and Peach.

In 2009, Caparas was controversially named a National Artist for Visual Arts and Film. However, in 2013, the Supreme Court of the Philippines invalidated the 2009 order that conferred the National Artist title to him and three others. Despite controversies, Caparas’s impact on Filipino popular culture remains significant, with his works continuing to influence comics, film, and television in the Philippines.
