CALENDAR METHOD Prepared by: Cruz, John Dale L.

Fertility Awareness Fertility awareness methods (FAMs) are ways to track your ovulation so you can prevent pregnancy. FAMs are also called " natural family planning ” and “ the rhythm method .”

The Temperature Method : you take your temperature in the morning every day before you get out of bed. The Cervical Mucus Method : you check your cervical mucus (vaginal discharge) every day. The Calendar Method : you chart your menstrual cycle on a calendar. Fertility Awareness

Calendar Method

What is Calendar Method? A natural form of contraception based on abstaining from sex during the time that a female is likely to be fertile. It helps you estimate the time of ovulation after you have charted the lengths of your menstrual cycles for several months.

How to use the CALENDAR METHOD? Keep track of the lengths of your menstrual cycles for 6-12 months . Day 1 is the first day of your menstrual bleeding.

Here’s how you do it! First Day of Period Number of Days in Cycle January 20 29 February 18 29 March 18 29 April 16 29 First Day of Period Number of Days in Cycle May 12 26 June 9 28 July 9 30 August 5 27

CALENDAR METHOD? If all of your cycles are shorter than 27 days and/or longer than 32 days , the calendar method won’t be accurate for you.

What are the safe days? To predict the first fertile day (when you can get pregnant) in your current cycle

What are the safe days? To predict the last fertile day in your current cycle

Special strings of beads called  cycle beads   that help keep track of cycles can be used with different colors of beads indicating what days are safe and unsafe to have unprotected sex; some women prefer tracking apps . Calendar Method

Tracking Apps

Pros’ Since it is natural , women who oppose “artificial” forms of contraception can use it. In fact, at one point it was the only contraceptive technique supported by the Catholic Church.

Pros’ It is completely free It does not carry the risk of health effects associated with hormone-based contraception No Prescription Required

Cons’ It has a large window of potential fertility , eliminating the possibility of sex for a large portion of the month. Not as reliable as other methods. Among 100 women in their first year of using the rhythm method, 24 will typically become pregnant .

Cons’ Requires abstinence and/or use of condoms Take several months of monitoring for you to have a clear pattern of when you are fertile. It does not offer protection against sexually transmitted infections. Lifespan of Sperm

Effectiveness With perfect use, this method can have a 2% failure rate , . However, this is rarely the case. Estimates have placed the annual failure rate at anywhere from 13-24% . This high failure rate, along with its extensive demands on attention and sexuality, make it a rarely recommended and utilized form of birth control.

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Proverbs 15:22 (NIV)
