Slide Content

Narratology For now, we are focusing fully on narrative structure – what happens and how is the film is structured, with reference to Todorov and subversion techniques. The sequence of events to apply Todorov and make notes in the form on Teams

Todorov’s narrative structure – 5 stages Todorov suggests that all narratives share a basic structure that involves a movement from one state of equilibrium to another. He suggests that these two states of equilibrium are separated by a period of imbalance or disequilibrium which needs to be resolved. Subversion techniques – flashback, flash forward, twist, parallel narrative

Todorov’s narrative structure – 5 stages

Vladimir Propp Propp’s seven-character type: Hero: central character of the narrative and the character we follow on their quest to complete the task at hand (there are also false heroes). Villain: the character that tries to fault the hero’s attempts to complete his/her task, usually for selfish reasons while presenting genuine threat (there are false heroes). Helper: accompanies the hero on some/most of their journey and although useful cannot complete the task unlike the hero. Mentor: provides hero with information/equipment key to completing their objective and is usually depicted as wise. Prize: is the person the hero saves and is the reward the hero is given for completing their task and is usually exclusively female. Dispatcher: is the character that sends the main character on his/her quest. Blocker: tries to prevent the hero from completing task but doesn’t have to be villain
