•The eyes, earsand nose require special attention for
cleansing during the patient's bath. The nurse has the
responsibility of assisting patients' in the care of eye
glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids etc. Important points:
Eyes, ears and nose are sensitive and therefore extra care
should be taken to avoid injury to these tissues.

Care of eyes
•Assessment:
-Abnormal lesions
-Discha rge
- Tearing
-Presence of a ny infection
-Use of Visual Aids (contacts, glasses)
•Asl< when patient needs to use these devices

Care of eyes:
•Wash around the eyes with a warm moist washcloth
with warm water-NO SOAP!
•Clean from the inner canthus to the outer canthus of the
eye. Pay special attention to the inner canthus.

•Provide special care for the eyes of unconscious
patients.
-Use artificial tear solution or norma l saline every four
hour, if blink reflex is absent.
-May need to tape the eye lids shut if unable to blinl< and
protect own eyes

Care of ears
•Usually requires minima l care
•Cleanse the external auricle with washcloth when
bath ing
·Avoid insertion of objects into the ear

Care of Ear:
•Hearing Aids:
a.Check that the device is function ing correctly and clean
any body oils or cerumen from the hearing aid routinely.
b.Mal<e sure the hearing aid is off and volume is down
before insertion and off when not in use
c.Insert hearing aid in ear by pulling earlobe
downward while pressing the hearing aid inward
d.Tur n on and adjust volume
e.Ask the patient if comfortable and can tl1ey hear!

Care of Nose:
•Nasolabial folds and outer parts of nose is cleaned with
warm sponge during bath
•Secretions can usually be removed from the nose by
having the patient blow into a soft tissue. But avoid harsh
blow.

Care of Nose:
•If patient is not able to do by themselves, the nurse will
assist using a NS moistened wash cloth or cotton tipped
applicator.
•If excessive secretions are present then do suction ing
·When NG tube/oxygen is being administered, clean the
nares every 8 hours.

.., Before insertion , check for cracks or rough edges
.., clean cerun1en frotn tip with pipe cleaner
.., Hearing aid should be applied to the correct ear. If using two
aids , it should be marked properly
.., Batteries should be checked and changed periodically
.., Ren1ove or discon nect batteries when not in use
.., Insert battery only in hearing aid turned off.
.., Ear n1olds need replacen1ent every 2- 3 years

lotions.
ll" Never imJnerse hearing aid in water
ll" Don't try to lubrica te hearing aids
"" Re1nove hearing aid before any med ical procedu res that
involves scanning
ll" Keep bearing aid out of chi ldren and pets.

"' Take care to prevent droppingof hearing aid
Ill> Keep away from very hot or cold places
"' Don't wear aid while bathing or perspiring heavily.
Ill> Store in a marked container in a safe place
"' Caregivers should receive special training in how to place
them 1n ear canal
"' Verify that hearing aid are functional
"' Common problems are switch turned off, clogged ear mold,
dislodged battery, twisted tubing earmold anaaid.

ESDentures are prosthetic devices const1ucted to replace
inissing teetl1; they are st1ppo11ed by the surrounding
soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity.

DENTURE CARE
FOR ELDERLY
Denture cleaning
•Clean thoroughly for everyday
•Rinse it after each use
•Place dentures in a cleaning solutionwhen not in use and allow
it to soak for overnight or for at least few hours
•Remove from cleansing solution and brush it
•Brush denture over sink lined with a face cloth and half filled
with water to prevent breakage if dropped

•Hold denture securely inone hand
•Don't squeeze
•Use denture paste, mild soap
Storing denture
·Cleansed and stored in tepid water
Fitting denture
•Contact physician when dentures are not fitting or
broken

Oral hygiene
•Inspect the mouth daily

•The cleaning or massaging a denture at least once
a day increases circulation.
