Carl Roger's theory on personality Name: Sowmya B N Junior M.Sc.

Introduction Carl Rogers (1902-1987) was a humanistic psychologist. He supported the views of Maslow and added; an environment with genuineness, acceptance and empathy is needed for a person to grow. Rogers believed that a person reaches to self-actualisation level when they achieve their goals, wishes and desires at all stages of their life.

Roger believed that a person's behaviour is a factor motivated by self-actualization tendencies to work and achieve the highest level of their potential and achievement. Self-concept : Set of perceptions and beliefs about his or her own self. Self-concept is influenced by: childhood experiences and evaluation by others. A positive self-concept is associated with feeling good and safe. If they have a negative self-concept they may feel unhappy with who they are.

Unconditional positive regard Unconditional positive regard is a concept in psychology introduced by Carl Rogers, a pioneer in client-centered therapy. Unconditional positive regard is where parents, significant others (and the humanist therapist) accept and loves the person for what he or she is, and refrain from any judgment or criticism.

Conditional Positive Regard Conditional positive regard is a concept in psychology that refers to the expression of acceptance and approval by others (often parents or caregivers) only when an individual behaves in a certain acceptable or approved way. This positive regard, love, or acceptance is conditionally based on the individual’s behaviors, attitudes, or views aligning with those expected or valued by the person giving the regard.
