NAME PICTURE FUNCTION Tennon Saw A Tennon Saw is used to cut and shape timber of an appropriate size Coping Saw A Coping Saw is used to cut curved and decorative features Mallet A Mallet is use to assemble as well as in conjunction with chiseling processes Hand Plane A hand plane is used to angle, smooth, bevel and chamfer timber surfaces Spokeshave A Spokeshave, flat or round, is used to shape and curve timber surfaces Chisels Chisels are used for removing materials, pairing and cleaning surfaces NAME PICTURE FUNCTION Steel Ruler ‘0’ Start Steel rulers are used to apply measurements as well as being durable and long lasting Marking Knife A Marking Knife is used to cut lines onto the surface of a piece of timber to guide relevant tool use thereafter Tri-Square The Tri-Square is used to mark lines at 90° to the edge of a piece of timber Marking Gauge A Marking Gauge is used to measure and scribe depth lines along a timber surface Mortise Gauge Similar to a marking gauge, the Mortise Gauge is used to measure and scribe lines along a timber surface whilst also specifically used for marking out mortise and tenons Sliding Bevel The sliding Bevel is used to mark multiple angles across the surface of a piece of timber Principles & Practices Planning & Management and Communicating RESOURCE 15: BASIC WOODWORKING HAND TOOLS 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 & 1.7 HISTORY LINK 2.6 million years ago early humans developed the oldest known tools, which were made from a combination of wood and stone. The evolution of humans and technology, including tools, has lead to the development of highly skilled crafts people in a broad range of disciplines. In Woodwork, there are fundamental hand tools for marking out and processing material. Each require many hours of practice before mastery is achieved. Being able to identify basic woodworking hand tools is essential for any woodwork student. Identifying what tool is necessary to execute a particular process promotes practical confidence and practical competency. Marking Out tools are very important in terms of the accuracy of all cutting processes. Being able to competently use cutting tools ensures that accurate, precise and neat work can be produce in an efficient and safe manner. All woodworking hand tools are hazardous and it is of the utmost importance that tools are respected. Mistakes regarding the use of hand tools will occur during practice as you progress toward mastery. However, it is important that such mistakes are made within the domain of safe practice and thus reducing the risk of any potential injury. Don’t be a fool, know your tools! The tools listed are but a few of the many others available for use in Wood Technology. There are variations of the above, as you will learn. ‘REMEMBER: Measure Twice & Cut Once’  LEARNING TRACKER JC KEY SKILLS BEING LITERATE, BEING NUMERATE, MANAGING INFORMATION & THINKING, COMMUNICATING, MANAGING MYSELF AND WORKING WITH OTHERS KEY SKILL ELEMENTS EXPRESSING IDEAS CLEARLY & ACCURATELY, EXPRESSING IDEAS MATHEMATICALLY, THINKING CRITICALLY & CREATIVELY, USING LANGUAGE, SETTING/ACHIEVING PERSONAL GOALS AND CO-OPERATING STATEMENT S OF LEARNING SOL15 , SOL19 AND SOL21 LEARNING OUTCOMES 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 & 1.7 ACTION VERBS EXPLORE, JUSTIFY, COLLABORATE, MANAGE, EXPLAIN AND APPRECIATE KEY QUESTIONS WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF USING MARKING OUT TOOLS?
