Alsukari Mine and its developments

Slide Content

Sukari mine [ Alsukari mine ] Sukari is a gold mine located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The Eastern desert Egypt is located in the south east of the Nile river delta of Egypt which is also called the Arabian desert. The eastern desert of Egypt is commonly known volcanic rock mountains that runs along the red sea coast which are estimated to have been formed 3 to 4 billion years ago. The eastern desert is also known for its rich in natural resources including Egypt's major oil fields, deposition of phosphate, asbestos, manganese, uranium and gold, but our main focus will be on gold.

Case study findings The Sukari underground gold mine began in 2007 where it found by the people of the Sukari village. It is now now owned by Centamin, centamin is a gold mining company focused on the Arabian-Nubian Shield. It is listed on the on the London Stock Exchange and also the Toronto Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 INDEX. FTSE 250 is a capitalization weightened index consisting of the 101th to the 350 th large companies listed on the London stock exchange.

Sukari mine before it got introduced to mechanization In the early 2000 Sukari mine was full on labor which was working on their own digging gold and other resources that were found there and sell them to provide for their family without being governed by a certain party. There was a large number of individuals who worked in mines back then the estimates is about 200 000 people which were competing there for resources, back then the were using shovels, double sided harmer, broad sided pickaxes, and picks that were usually made of iron. Children labors often carried baskets that were used to transport material.

Continuation… They used many differently techniques back then which included hushing, which is a method of hydraulic mining that used water to erode rocks. They also used fire to hit the rock, which was subsequently quenched with water, thus cracking the rock through thermal shock. They also used shaft sinking which was one of the most dangerous and most difficult form of mining. It involved digging tunnels underground, allowing workers to extract the ore. The whole thing lasted until , late 2000 when centamin took power of the Sukari mine.

The introduction of mechanization in Sukari mines. In 2010 when the Centamin took power and governed the Sukari mine, new methods of mining were introduced off which some of them were technological related including use of AI, use of robotics in mining that involved heavy machinery, trucks for shifting or transporting minerals, nuclear bombs for blasting mines, use of robots to enter deep down into the mine(core). Which all of the mentioned above fall under the 4IR. The main purpose implementing this new strategy was to reduce cost, faster mining, safer mining, mining with a smaller crew underground, smaller capital expenditure & also development of more productive crew.

Continuation… Although the government introduced this method it led to a lot of people not having access like before to go and mines, because they had to be familiar with skills of using those machinery from mines in order to get access. On the environment there was a lot of erosions, sinkholes and also loss of biodiversity. The other negative impact was that of deforestation, contamination and alterations of soil profiles, contaminations of streams, increase in noise level from the surrounding and dust leading to air pollution and frequently changing climate change.
