CELL INJURY

Lung Anthracosis black discoloration of the lung due to the accumulation of carbon particles in the lungs tissue. Caused by repeated exposure to air pollution or inhalation of smoke or coal dust particles.

Fatty degeneration of the liver (steatosis) It is abnormal accumulation of fat (lipids) within hepatocytes. The  liver - the primary organ of lipid metabolism- is the most common organ affected by this type of degeneration.   Grossly, yellowish in colour .

Fatty infiltration of the heart A jar contains enlarged heart . A thick yellowish fatty material is deposited under the visceral layer of the pericardium.

Brown atrophy of the heart A jar contains a heart of an adult, the size of which is diminished in relation to the aorta and pulmonary vessels. The coronary arteries are tortuous. A window is opened in the cardiac wall to show the brown color of the thinned myocardium.

Amyloid degeneration of the liver A jar contains a slice of liver tissue that shows the following characters: O uter surface is smooth. the capsule is tense and stretched. the borders are sharp . the cut surface is waxy with light brown areas (amyloid) alternating with yellowish areas(fatty changes) giving the mosaic appearance.

Fatty change of uterine leiomyoma A jar contains one half of a uterus cut longitudinally. The uterus is moderately increased in size. The cut surface shows the following:  Large interstitial leiomyoma about 7x9 cm arising from uterine wall distorting and compressing uterine cavity.  The cut sections shows bundles of smooth muscle fibers arranged in concentric manner taking whorly appearance ; and are separated by bands of whitish fibrous tissue running in different directions.  Yellowish areas are seen in the tumor tissue denoting fatty change of uterine leiomyoma. 

Myxomatous degeneration of u terine leiomyoma: A jar contains one half of a uterus, Fallopian tube and ovary. The uterus is moderately increased in size. • The cut surface shows the following: • Large interstitial leiomyoma about 7x9 cm.  The cut sections shows a rim of smooth muscle fibers arranged in concentric manner taking whorly appearance; and are separated by bands of whitish fibrous tissue running in different directions.  Inside the tumor tissue there are multiple large cystic spaces variable in size and shape containing jelly-like semitranslucent mucoid material, denoting myxomatous degeneration replacing most of the uterine leiomyoma.

Thyroid adenoma with calcification (solitary thyroid nodule): A jar contains a solitary (single) thyroid nodule cut into two halves: The nodule is:  About 4 cm. in diameter, brownish in color.  Well encapsulated by fibrous tissue capsule.  The cut surface shows chalky white area of dystrophic calcification .

Albinism Genetic disorders in which there is partial or total lack of the melanin pigment   in the eyes, skin, and hair .
