Cellular respiration is the process by which cells release energy from glucose using oxygen, producing carbon dioxide, water, and ATP. It includes glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration provide ene

What is cellular respiration, and which organelle is involved ?
Code 41253305
Cellular respiration
process by which organic compounds (glucose) are broken down
in a cell using oxygen to release carbon dioxide, water and energy
that is stored in adenosine triphosphate (ATP molecule). (Scrivin,
2016).
This energy is then used by the cells to perform activities.
But what could be this “activities”????
Importance of cellular respiration
According to Blaza (2016), it provides ATP energy for,
Movement
Protein synthesis
Active transport
msibisiyabonga691 (2024), adds that it,
plays a role in carbon cycle
supports important metabolic pathway in the cell.
Chemical equation for cellular respiration:
Figure 1
In South Africa coal is used to produce
electricity.
Analogy:
Mitochondrion = Eskom
Cell = Limpopo province
Glucose = Coal
ATP = Electricity used to power homes,
businesses, and industries
Cellular respiration process = Power
generation process
Let’s use this analogy to explain cellular respiration.
Figure 2
Please remember this was just an
analogy. What did we say cellular
respiration is in Life sciences?
NB
Repurposed from Scrivin (2016)
1.Aerobic respiration
requires oxygen to break
down food (Blaza, 2016).
It consists of:
1. Glycolysis (Cytoplasm)
Process whereby glucose is
broken down to form pyruvic
acid.
Glucose is broken down
To form 2 molecules of
pyruvic acid
Releasing energized
hydrogen and ATP. (Blaza,
2016)Glucose (6C)
Pyruvic acid (3C) Pyruvic acid
(3C)

+
2. Kreb cycle (Mitochondrion)
the complete breakdown of pyruvic
acid to form co2 and energy rich
hydrogen atoms (Sana, 2023). This is
when
pyruvic acid from Glycolysis
Is used in series of cyclic
reactions
To release energy rich hydrogen
atoms
and carbon dioxide (Sana 2023)

3. Oxidative Phosphorylation
Energised hydrogen atoms from glycolysis and Kreb cycle
Are used to form ATP
The hydrogen atoms combine with oxygen to form water
Example
Figure 3
Anaerobic respiration (Cytoplasm)
No oxygen is required.
Produces less ATP than aerobic because not
all the glucose is broken down (Pickerington
High School Central, 2014).
In animals (lactic acid fermentation)
Occurs in muscles during exercise.
Glycolysis occurs to produce lactic acid in
small ATP energy.
The lactic acid tires the muscles.
When the muscles receive oxygen, lactic acid
becomes pyruvic acid(Blza, 2016).

Example : During an exercise

In plants ( alcohol fermentation).
Nacuna (2019), defines this is an
anaerobic process that partially
breaks down glucose to produce
alcohol and carbon dioxide. Firstly,
glycolysis occurs to release pyruvic
acid and small ATP energy.
Pyruvic acid is then broken
down to form alcohol (ethanol),
releasing carbon dioxide (Sana,
2023)

From the discussions,
what do you think are the similarities and
differences between aerobic and anaerobic
respiration
Similarities
Glucose is the raw material in each process
Energy is released.
CO is released.
