Slide Content

CCQs - What are CCQ? - Why do we need to use them? - When and how to be used ? - Practice - Tips for CCQs.

Why do we need to use them ? 1 . To check students ’ understanding of what have been taught. 2. To increase students’ participation .(STT) 3. To increase comprehension of vocabulary, grammar, instructions, and content. 4. To allow teachers and students assessing comprehension quickly. 5. To encourage both; teacher & students keeping using L2 and avoid L1. 6. To keep students focused.

How should CCQs be done? OR How can Ts be good CCQrs ? By asking simple questions; yes/no, either/or & simple “ wh ” questions. By avoiding using of target language . By using pictures, t hrough dictionary definition (vocabulary) or (Grammar Reference) synonyms and antonyms. By preparing CCQs in advance.

How to prepare CCQs ? 1: Keep the language in them simple. 2: Don’t use the target language in the CCQ. 3: Only check the target language 4: Make sure you cover all the elements of meaning. 5: Have a limited number (3 normally enough) 6: Should have a clear answer. Make sure you plan your CCQs (and answers) and write them down so you can see them

 Dos &  Don’ts Use a grammar book or student dictionary to help you understand the meaning. Prepare your CCQs in advance and put them in your lesson plan with answers. Use simpler language than the target language. Use yes/no questions or questions with one word answers. Decide what answers you expect. Make sure you are checking the target language only in your example sentence. Stop asking this question; ‘‘What does it mean?’’ Don’t forget to use CCQs in your lesson when teaching new grammar and vocabulary. Don’t over-do it or have too many questions. Don’t repeat the target language in the CCQ.

Step 1. Identify the meaning of the word Step 2. Turn that meaning into a closed question with a short/ easy answer. *Steps to prepare   CCQs   (Cover all the elements of meaning)

Example He managed to get to sleep. –He tried to do something. –It wasn’t easy. –He succeeded. Step 1. Identify the meaning of the word

Example He managed to get to sleep. –He tried to do something. –It wasn’t easy. –He succeeded. –Did he try? (yes) -Was it easy? (no) –He succeeded. Step 2. Turn that meaning into a closed question with a short/ easy answer.

Let’s practise “ Vocabulary ” Target l

Let’s practise “ Grammar ” Target l “ Look ! They’re painting the wall .” Grammar Reference: Present continuous tense is for something that is happening at the moment of speaking. More practice! “grammar” Target language : “I used to watch TV a lot .” Grammar Reference: We use “ used to do ” form when we are talking about something that happened regularly in the past but doesn’t happen any more .
