Center of Gravity M . KARTHIKA Asst Professor, Dept of Physics, Bon Secours College , Thanjavur Dt.

Who invented center of gravity? The concept of " center  of mass" in the form of the  center of gravity  was first introduced by the great ancient Greek physicist, mathematician, and engineer Archimedes of Syracuse.

CENTER OF GRAVITY A point, near or within a body, through which its weight can be assumed to act when considering forces on the body and its motion under  gravity . This coincides with the  center  of mass in a uniform gravitational field.

Center of Gravity Equation

Does everything have a center of gravity? Not  everything  moves like this when  gravity  acts on it. Even so, all objects behave as though their mass (the stuff they're made from) is concentrated at a point called their  center of gravity . A simple object like a ball  has  its  center of gravity  in a very obvious place: right at its  center .

What is Centre of gravity in human body? The  centre of gravity  (COG)  of the human body  is a hypothetical point around which the force of  gravity  appears to act. It is point at which the combined mass  of the body  appears to be concentrated. Because it is a hypothetical point, the COG need not lie within the physical bounds of an object or person.

Why is center of gravity important in cars? In the  automotive  industry, the  center of gravity  height is an  essential  parameter. The lower the  center of gravity  is, the more stability the  car  or truck has. T his explains why SUVs have more rollover issues than  cars , because they are higher off the road so their  center of gravity  is higher.

Why is CG important? The Balance point (Centre of Gravity -  CG ) is very  important  during flight because of its effect on the stability and performance of the aircraft. It must remain within carefully defined limits at all stages of flight. ... The structural strength of the aircraft also limits the maximum weight the aircraft can safely carry.

Why is the center of gravity important on a rocket? A restoring force exists for this model  rocket  because the  center  of pressure is below the  center of gravity . If the  center  of pressure is above the  center of gravity , the lift and drag forces maintain their directions but the direction of the torque generated by the forces is reversed.

Stability If an object is tilted it will topple over if a vertical line from its centre of gravity falls outside its base .

Figure 4(a) the car is flat on the road. In Figure 4(b) the car is tilted but because the vertical line through the centre of gravity is inside the case of the car and so the car falls back to the level again. But in Figure 4(c) the vertical line from the centre of gravity falls outside the base and so the car topples over.

Equllibrium

Typers of equilibrium If an object is in equilibrium, i.e., if it is balanced, then if a force is applied to the object it will either tilt, tip over or roll. These three conditions are known as: (a) stable equilibrium (it tilts and then falls back to the original position) (b) unstable equilibrium (it tilts and then falls over) neutral equilibrium (it rolls)
