Considerable reduction of pump power and improved efficiency of the
desulphurization process was achieved based on our simulation.
One of our projects was to investigate the exhaust gas flow distribution in
the desulphurization plant. We found that, due to the complicated duct
structure for the exhaustflow, the flow distribution was very unevenly
distributed, and that resulted ina reduced efficiency for the
desulphurization process.
Wemodelledthecompleteexhaustflowandtheinjection,trackingand
evaporationoftheslurryflow.Basedonourworkandrecommendations,
changesweremadetotheexhaustflowpathandtheslurryinjection.The
resultofthiswasverysuccessfulwithanimproveddesulphurization
processandareductionofthepowerconsumptionfortheslurrypumps
by30percent.

Theinletexhaustflowdistributionwaspredictedbyincludingthe
upstreamducting.Thisrevealedanunevendistribution,exacerbated
bythetransitionductintothedesulphurizationplant.Theskewedflow
profilewassuccessfullyamendedbytheinstallationofguidingplates,
thedesignandlocationofwhichweredeterminedbasedontheCFD-
analysis
Themodellingconsistedofa3Dturbulenttwo-phasetransientcoupled
calculation,includingevaporation,breakupandcollisionoftheslurry
droplets.Theinitialdropletsizedistribution,attheexitoftheslurrypipe,
wasbasedonempiricalrelationsasfunctionofnozzlediameter,pressure
andliquidproperties.
