USE OF CASE STUDY
PURPOSE OF CASE STUDY The study provides instructions in engineering ethics through a case of space shuttle challenger disaster. The course begins by presenting the minimum technical details needed to understand the physical cause of shuttle failure . The purpose of case studies in general is to provide us with the context of the technical details of an engineering decisions in which an ethical principle may have been violated.
GOING TO SPACE WAS MAN’S GREATEST ACHIVEMENT
Challenger was the name of NASA’S space shuttle .The purpose of the shuttle was to make multiple trips and launch satellites into space .Challengers was NASA’S greatest triumphs. It was the second shuttle to reach space. It is launched in 4 th April 1983 it also completed nine successful milestone missions, but challenger was also one of NASA’S greatest tragedy on its 10 th launch on jan 28,1986 shuttle was torn apart, its parts blew into flames and fell off into water killing all seven of its crew members and all happened just in 73seconds after its flight. ABOUT CHALLENGER
The blast was so massive just happened after 73 seconds after its flight. All the parts of the shuttle were broken into pieces.
All the seven crew members died
For challenger in its 10 th mission has many problems from the beginning. One day before the launch the temperature in central Florida is 37f which is very low
To understand that we have to understand the basic structure of space shuttle. There are three basic components in a space shuttle they are: Orbiter: which holds the crew External tank: That holds fuel for main engine Solid rocket boosters: Provides lift during the first two minutes. This happened because the space shuttle external fuel tank is collapsed releasing all its liquid to create a giant fireball thousands of feet in air . Why explosion happened ?
What went wrong? NASA appointed a commission
They said that it was a cold morning on the day of launch below freezing point . In such conditions some parts of the shuttle particularly the o-rings are unsafe to use .There was no prior experience for NASA to launch shuttle in such conditions. Richard Feynman concluded at final meeting that “CHALLENGER IS A MAN MADE DISASTER WHICH DIDN’T HAVE TO HAPPEN”. Conclusions of Rogers commission
The function of o-rings is to seal the joints so tightly that they prevent violently hot gases from escaping . They stopped working and became brittle in low temperatures . They starts working when gas leak is observed but they failed to seal the gas at low temperatures. Function of o-rings
They cancelled all the shuttles till 1988 Solved the problem of o-rings by keeping a heat pad to make sure that they work properly no matter who cool it is outside. Learning's from the incident
