Critical review: Challenges and Benefits of Blended Learning in Tertiary Education ESL Classrooms: A Literature Review
Content of The Critical Review Overall View of The Article. Abstract Introduction Literature Review Discussion Conclusion Reference Critical Review of The Article Strengths Weaknesses
ABSTRACT A relatively emerging subject called blended learning mixes conventional classroom methods with online instruction. Recent studies that look at the academic and social benefits of this teaching method have emphasized the usage of blended learning. Since it combines traditional and online teaching modes, the strengths of blended learning rest on both teaching approaches . However, literature on the difficulties that English language instructors’ experience while implementing blended learning is still scarce . A process of in-depth critical analysis of existing literature on blended learning is carried out. Hence, this paper presents the benefits and challenges of blended learning in tertiary education ESL classrooms along with the comparison of UTAUT 2 model . Keywords Blended Learning, Tertiary Education, ESL Classrooms, Challenges, Benefits Background of the topic is clearly stated to give some information regarding the topic. This is highlighted in yellow The gap is highlighted in green. In blue highlight is the method used to gather the findings from previous studies The aim of the LR is clear highlighted in purple. Clear ob jective is important to attract the readers on the significance of the study, for publication purpose and emphasise the focus of the paper. IMPROVEMENTS “LEARNING” is too broad. Maybe the researcher could specify to certain skill or aspect in language learning. Method could be explained by including the years of publication and the number of studies involved. A brief analysis from the d iscussion could be included by stating our conclusive interpretation and implications of this LR.
INTRODUCTION Overall comment for introduction Suitable length used for this section. Studies used as reference were from local and oversea researchers – gave a global perspective on the topic. All keywords showed in the abstract are mentioned in the introduction In these 4 paragraphs, author managed to include overview on digital technology the use of technology in HEI in Malaysia 3 benefits of BL (Connection, for better understanding, sharing concept) 3 challenges of BL (Lack of excitement, energy , dedication) The section ends with a THESIS STATEMENT (research objective) to discuss on the challenges & benefits of BL in tertiary education in ESL classroom IMPROVEMENTS The reference used is old (benefits by Farahiza , 2010; challenges by Thorne, 2003). Could use recent research to support evidence on the implementation of blended learning. It could be that the author wants to highlight the early existence of blended learning in education. Punctuation / Sentence structure error occurred in Introduction session (Para 3). Could be corrected by…. “ Blended learning has been known for the benefits it has to offer for both students and educators. According to Farahiza Zaihan Azizan (2010), through the use of technology, blended…..”
LITERATURE REVIEW Definition Of Blended Learning Overall comment for 2.1 T he author was merely extracting the different definitions of blended learning. This section could be better improved if the author lays out the def according to the years, from 2012 to 2021. This could provide readers with wider view of how blended learning evolves over the years and synthesize the definition based on our understanding of the literature Esl Teaching And Learning In Tertiary Education Overall comment for 2.2 This section has presented a summary of important key points ( ESL T & L , T ertiary L evel) with clear understanding and examples from previous studies. This section is narrowed down to language T&L in 21 st century. Blended Learning in ESL Classrooms at Tertiary Institutions Overall comment for 2.3 This section touches on both benefits and challenges of blended learning in ESL classroom. The writer managed to lay out the topic sentence in every paragraph to state and clarify the main idea. Each para is supplied with clear analysis from the previous studies IMPROVEMENT APA calls for consistency and accuracy in verb tense usage. Past tense or the present perfect should be used for the literature review and the description of the procedure if discussing past events.
LITERATURE REVIEW IMPROVEMENT APA calls for consistency and accuracy in verb tense usage. Past tense or the present perfect should be used for the literature review and the description of the procedure if discussing past events. Punctuation errors in citation format. “…. blending of offline and online experiences (Cheung & Wang 2019)..” The use of pronoun. R eference “it” can be used since this subject matter has been mentioned before “ Blended learning is a concept that enables teachers and students to collaborate in teaching and learning through different settings. Blended learning can be defined as a transformative Omission of word . “… institutions need to provide relevant and current not only in their … “ TO “…provide relevant and current ( transformation) not only…” Long sentence structure “ For instance, students can search for other platforms available through an internet connection to learn, this motivates students to look for learning resources to achieve their academic goals and encourages them to take advantage of other websites’ potential to enhance their English language ability. ” The structure for this example is too long. Readers might need to rea more than once to comprehend the idea of the sent. Thus, it would be better if it is split into two sentences to show cause-effect relationship. Inconsistency in writing “ Riel et al. (2016) , there are six types of challenges that teachers encounter throughout the process of implementing a blended learning curriculum. For instance, difficulty in communicating and delegating tasks among students , struggle in finding adequate time to conduct lessons as well as scheduling time to complete the work given outside of the classroom . 3 challenges instead of 6
LITERATURE REVIEW (UTAUT 2) Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT 2) Overall comment for 2.4 In better elaborating these constructs, the author managed to define the constructs for better understanding. Good writing technique ( the use of topic sentence & concluding sentence smoothen the flow of ideas). Connectors were used in this section to show greater knowledge on the constructs, to ensure all ideas, arguments were presented coherently and formatted neatly to ease the writing flow. The author managed to reason why this theory holds a strong foundation in the LR “ always been used to examine how people want to make full use of technology and their motivations for doing .” The use of diagram helps to better understand the concept and the difference between UTAUT 1 and UTAUT 2. The author synthesized finding from previous studies and linked them with the benefits of BL to show its importance. Acknowledgement for both strengths and weaknesses of using technology in BL. - gives us deeper, more fulfilling research understanding and experience in doing research
LITERATURE REVIEW (UTAUT 2) IMPROVEMENT There were 2 authors that often used by the research of this paper ( Aliaafreh & Venkatesh). This could lead to the risk of biasness and resulted us to see things using only one direction. Wrong choice of words used “ …. students will build behavioural intent to employ ….” TO “… students will build behavioural intention to employ..” Outdated reference – 2009 2.4.4 – Facilitating Condition : t his para is lacking with appropriate references to support the statement, avoid sweeping statements. The use of symbol “…. academic performance in achieving teaching/learning objectives ”
DISCUSSION Overall comment for Discussion The author examined the significance, importance, and applicability of the provided topics / key elements in the discussion section based on previous studies. Here, the emphasis is primarily on summarising and analysing what he learned, showing how his knowledge relates to earlier studies in the literature review, and emphasising a case for his final conclusion. In this section, the author had successfully outlined and explained the key ideas, exhibiting how these ideas could be applied to further react to the RQs. The citation section is the only part of the essay that could be enhanced because it gives our study vital credibility. (some statements have no reference,,written in a wrong year)
CONCLUSION Overall comment for Conclusion Summary on the key elements: Benefits and challenges of BL – Taken from previous studies. Suggestions to better implement BL in ESL classroom Emphasis on the objective of the LR Suggestions for future research
