Challenges Faced by Our Country After independence in 1947 India has faced many problems internally & externally Problems need to be resolved by us Indians through proper planning & good governance National issues need remedies through proper legislative reforms Citizens of the country must be honest & follow rules & regulations without taking shortcuts Every citizen must perform their duties to the country: keep it clean & be truthful 2

Communalism-Biggest Threat for Unity Communalism is biggest threat to society India is a country of many religions & different languages Need to show unity in diversity Every community must live peacefully without opposing other peoples interests & identities Creates social groupism , economic antagonism & political rivalry Can disrupt unity & integrity of our nation Uniform legal system, equal treatment of all citizens, practice of secularism & national feeling is required Vote Bank politics to appease communities must stop and think about one nation, one goal Citizens must analyze political leaders who work for the betterment of India & Indians National Interest must be above any religion Young generation must think big & be positive & end this menace called “communalism” 3

Regionalism-Another Threat for Progress Strong feeling of the local area is called Regionalism Local feelings are tolerable as far as it promotes growth and integrates with the national unity & interests Historical background, social system, economic considerations, cultural diversities & geographical aspects promote regionalism Glorification of regionalism hampers the unity & development of nation Indian constitution emphasizes national unity & integrity by upholding single national citizenship & also provides enough space for regional development Preamble of our Indian constitution declares “ We the people of India” stressing nationalism as the key States were divided in 1956 on linguistic basis to help development & not create rivalry : Nation comes first & then everything else Regionalism can be seen due to border disputes, sharing river water, etc. Healthy regionalism must always integrate with strong nationalism in our country Union government started many projects in North East states for progress 4

Illiteracy-Another Major Problem Education of every citizen is important for National Progress Developing country like India must solve problem of illiteracy Every citizen must understand their duties & responsibilities At the time of Independence India has only 12% literates, which increased to 74% in 2011 – still 26% are illiterates Government has made education free for children ages 6-14 years Many schemes like Sarva Siksha Abhyan & National Literacy Mission was started by Governments Sakshara Bharath programme was launched to eradicate illiteracy Article 21A, Right to Education is now a fundamental right since 2009 Greater the number of literates in the country greater the stability and faster the advancement 5

Corruption-Cancer of the Society Corruption is present in every walk of life – weakens the society & country Corruption means using wrong methods by bribery or unlawful means Corrupt people depart from what is right & legally correct, exercise improper & selfish use of authority to benefit themselves, relatives & friends Duty of every citizen to fight against corrupt people – Do not bow to corrupt people which will make our country GREAT!! Corruption affects social, economic & political system of our country Promotes crime, economic inequality & anti-national elements Corruption largely depends on 3 aspects: Individual sense of values Set of social accepted values as a whole System of Governance or administration Strong political will along with public support is necessary to get rid of corruption Every citizen has the right to question any bureaucrat if they are not performing their duties – legally binded as public servants Lokpal & Lok Ayukta got corrective utility to control 6

Status of Women-Strong Society Women are no different from men – They need to be treated equally Many women have contributed hugely to the country in politics, sports, literature, governance, etc. Women's education is on top of governments agenda Prohibition of child marriage act, dowry act, women education, etc. are brought in to improve social status of women Karnataka government has 33% reservation for women in local governments Women play a big role in developing social life of the society No differentiation between men & women in terms of salaries, jobs, etc. are implemented in India at some levels Still lot to be done 7

Economic Inequality- Divides the Society Increasing economic gap between rich & poor divides the society Inequality situation is significant between rural & urban sections Government benefits do not reach the poor people leading to disparity High salary jobs in urban area private sector increases this gap Poor & tribal must be made partners in development so that all the benefits are shared equally by all citizens of India Proper economic reforms, fiscal politics, healthy taxation, coupled with small scale & rural based industries help to reduce inequality Policies must be regulated so that the fruits of national growth are distributed equally among all the citizens of the country 8

Over Population – Can be Great Strength India is the second most populated country in the world – can use advantageous if used properly Increasing birth rate & decreasing death rate is a also a sign of improvement in health care India has the youngest population in the world – need to convert the vast human resources as potential element of national growth India need to balance the use of human resources & natural resources to enhance national growth Lot of good brains are lost to other countries due to social menace Spread of literacy, technical training, corruption free society, industrial growth, equal opportunities increases India’s capabilities Human power can rightly be deemed as an asset & not liability with proper planning 9

Poverty – Foremost Problem Poverty is when people do not get sufficient food, clothing, housing & other basic necessities of life Socio-economic disparity leads to poverty for some sections Since independence many programs were launched by governments to eradicate poverty – due to corruption not implemented properly Five year plans are directed to eradicate poverty Jawahar Rozgar Yojana & Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya are some schemes taken by government Employment, education, & proper utilization of resources can reduce poverty in our country Increase in production, hard work, & proper distribution of wealth can be achieved by economic reforms 10

Profiteering – Dishonest Citizens Profiteering means earning profits at the expense of general public or consumers – gaining money by not following legal laws- cheating Easy money corrupts society, causes inequality & enhances poverty Profiteering leads to unethical practice of trade – resulting in crime Increasing inflation significantly erodes large chunk of income of masses Increasing margin of profits by manufacturers & distributors have paved the path for profiteering Unhealthy marketing practices, hoarding, black marketing, lack of proper price monitoring by commercial authorities affects masses Proper governmental regulations, control of price index, expansion of cooperative markets, taxation policy are some of the remedial measures 11

Smuggling – Against National Interest Smuggling harms national & economic interests Domestic industries, markets & consumers suffer from this practive Affects national economy directly Can be checked by import substitutions Vigilance on borders, ports, export-import policy, inter-state trade agreements can check smuggling Citizens of the country must be aware that this is anti-national & must not encourage this practice – boycott smuggled goods CITIZENS MUST TACKLE PROBLEMS & NOT DEPEND ONLY ON THE GOVERNMENT TO ERADICATE THE PROBLEMS BE A GREAT CITIZEN OF THE COUNTRY 12
