Trade and travel, military conquest and diplomatic contacts linked Italian towns and courts with the world beyond. The new culture was admired and imitated by the educated and the wealthy. But very few of the new ideas could reach the ordinary man as they were not able to read and write. 1
By the 15 th and early 16 th century HUMANIST IDEAS spread in NORTH EUROPE. In the north Europe, humanism attracted many members of the church. They inspired Christian to discard unnecessary rituals and condemned them. Philosophers believed in a distant God who created man. 2
Christian humanist like: THOMAS MORE ERASMUS (In England) (In Holland) Called church greedy institution by selling ‘indulgences’ document.
Humanist scholars were able to point out that the document ‘Donation of Constantine’ by which the clergy claimed to judicial and fiscal powers was not genuine and had been forged later. 3
4 In 1517, a young German monk called Martin Luther launches a campaign against the catholic church.
He asked his followers to have complete faith in God. His movement was called The Protestant Reformation . By this the churches in GERMANY and SWITZERLAND broke their connection with the Pope and Catholic Church.
His ideas were popularised by: ULRICH ZWINGLI JEAN CALVIN (later)
Merchants supported reforms in cities. Other German reformers like the Anababtist were more radical. They blended the idea of salvation with the end of all forms of social oppression. According to them God had created all people equal. 5
So they were not expected to pay taxes and had the right to choose their priests. This appealed to peasants oppressed by feudalism. 6
Luther did not support radicalism. In ENGLAND, rulers ended the connection with the pope. The King/Queen became the head of the Church. 7
The Catholic Church began to reform itself within. In SPAIN and ITALY churchman emphasised the need for a simple life and service to the poor.
In SPAIN, Ignatius Loyola set up the society of JESUS in 1540. His followers were called JESUITS. 8
