OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE & CSSD ROLE UNIT - 1

Definition of infectious diseases Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Some infectious diseases are minor and some are very serious. Or Infectious diseases are illnesses caused by harmful organisms (pathogens) that get into your body from the outside. Pathogens that cause infectious diseases are viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and, rarely, prions. You can get infectious diseases from other people, bug bites and contaminated food, water or soil. Or Infectious diseases are known as communicable diseases, it is are caused by organisms that enter and multiply within the human body.

Infectious Diseases

Causes of Infectious Diseases Microorganisms are organisms that can be seen only through a microscope. Microorganisms and viruses that cause disease are called pathogens Pathogens can cause an infectious disease when they enter your body and multiply.

Bacteria are simple, single-celled microorganisms. Bacteria live in air, soil, food, and in and on the bodies of plants and animals, including you. Viruses can multiply only after entering a living cell, then takes over the cell’s mechanisms, resulting in cell damage or death. Fungi: Organisms such as yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. Protozoans: Single-celled organisms that are much larger and more complex than bacteria . Some infectious diseases are caused by animals such as mites, lice, and certain worms.

How infectious diseases are transmitted — modes of transmission Contact transmission – direct contact with infectious blood or body substances. Droplet transmission – infectious agent in large droplets (respiratory secretions / splash / splatter). Airborne transmission – infectious agent in aerosols and are inhaled. Food-borne transmission – consumption of contaminated food. Water-borne transmission – consumption of contaminated water. Vector-borne transmission – carried by a vector e.g. mosquito bites etc.

CSSD

What are the roles and responsibilities of CSSD? Many hospital departments rely on the service from the CSSD. With the centralization of the pre-disinfection, cleaning, packing and sterilization of all items in one department. It is of paramount importance to  provide consistently high standards in the sterilization techniques and product quality .

OBJECTIVE OF CSSD The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) is a service unit of the hospital responsible for  providing guaranteed sterile equipments / instruments to all the departments of hospital for immediate use in patients care  – A step towards the prevention of hospital acquired infections (HAI).

FUNCTION OF CSSD The Sterile Processing Department (Central Supply, or Sterile Supply as it is also known), comprises that service within the hospital in which  medical/surgical supplies and equipment, both sterile and, are cleaned, prepared, processed, stored, and issued for patient care . Sterile processing departments are typically divided into four major areas to accomplish the functions of decontamination, assembly and sterile processing, sterile storage, and distribution. - Decontamination. - Sterilization. - Storage. - Distribution.

WORKFLOW OF CSSD items are received from user departments through receipt window . Records are maintained and issue slips are also provided. Articles are further sorted to be sent for cleaning and sterilization. received from the respective wards.

CHALLENGES IN CSSD A poorly designed or insufficient backup of surgical instruments  makes the completion of sets impossible. If instruments need repair or must be substituted, CSSD often can't provide appropriate replacement. As a consequence, incomplete sets come into the OR and cause time consuming delays.

CSSD ROLE IN PATIENT SAFETY The CSSD plays a vital role in patient safety and in reducing hospital surgical infection . From an infection control perspective, it is essential to ensure that proper disinfection of surgical equipment is performed. Its main role is prevention of infection.

BENEFITS OF CSSD IN HOSPITALS Distribution: Providing crash carts. Maintaining decontaminated medical provisions. Confirming that disinfected goods do not become obsolete/averting incident linked sterility problems. Transporting sterile provisions where they are required and collecting contaminated ones.
