Definition: The ability to think about thinking
In adolescents, there comes a time when you can reflect on
your own thought process for the first time.
Adolescent Egocentrism
Definition: Difficulty distinguishing between one's own thinking,
and thinking about the thoughts of others.
This can lead to an egocentrism in adolescents
Imaginary Audience
Definition: Our EXAGGERATED belief that other's are paying
attention or thinking about our appearance and behaviors.
It's the belief that more people care about what you look like
and act like than actually do.
Personal Fable
Definition: Our belief that our experience and behaviors are
unique and nobody has ever done them before.
When adolescents first begin "thinking about their thoughts"
they sometimes come to the realization that an idea they had
was unique and had never been thought before.
Actual Self
Definition: An adolescent's actual self is who they actually view
themselves to be which includes the traits and qualities they
VIEW themselves to have
This is how adolescents see themselves.
Possible Self
Definition: The traits and qualities you believe you COULD
have
Actual self is how you view yourself now, but possible self is
how you could be.
Ideal Self
There are 2 Types of Possible Selves the ideal self is:
Definition: The person an adolescent would like to be
You could wish to be more popular or get straight A's
Feared Self
The 2nd Type of Possible Self is the feared self:
Definition: The person an adolescent imagines they could be,
but fear that outcome.
An adolescent may fear becoming an outcast or not getting into
a good college.
