Learning Outcome Apply the concept of naturalism to daily teaching and educational management practices
Rational/Introduction Naturalism Philosophy is a type of Educational philosophy that states that only natural laws and forces exist in the universe and drive the world in accordance. It also denies the existence of God and supernatural influence. Naturalism in education is based on the idea that children should learn and explore in a natural setting, rather than in a traditional classroom. This means that experiential learning and outdoor activities are prioritized over traditional lecture-based instruction.

Nature of Naturalism Education is to be in accordance with nature. It emphasizes learning through the senses. It is a philosophy which considers nature as everything and denies the existence of any spirit. It does not believe in existence of God. It gave importance to the matter and physical world. 1

Forms of Naturalism Physical Naturalists Biological Naturalist 3
Forms of Naturalism Physical Naturalists It is also known as material naturalism. This type of naturalism lays emphasis purely on physical nature. It believes only in the reality of material objects and the laws of mass and motion. Man is only one of the objects of physical nature, a creature of mass and motion. 3
Forms of Naturalism Biological Naturalists Darwin (1809-1882) and Lamarck (1744-1829) are the greatest exponents of ‘biological naturalism’. It derives its data and first principles from the biological rather than the physical sciences. With a great faith in biological evolution, it accepts man as the highest form of living organism in the evolutionary process. 3
Stoicism in Relation to Naturalism Stoic Philosophers believe that they can equate moral people with those who live in Constance with the dictate of the right reason manifesting itself with nature. Also, they can portray them as self-sufficient individuals who possess the capability of disciplining themselves. Man’s desires must be controlled. Man should be indifferent to life’s vicissitudes. 4
Synthesis of Naturalism and Implication to Education The theory of Naturalism looks at Education to be in accordance with Nature and the nature of the child. Dewey (1960) argued that all teaching must be learner-centered. This implies that in as mush as Nature is in, the child occupies the central position in the educative process. In other words, good education as far as the naturalists are concerned. Education is only direct contact with nature. 5
Synthesis of Naturalism and Implication to Education Naturalists want all Education to be in strict conformity with the nature of the world. Naturalism as a philosophy of education has exercised a great influence on the theory and practice of education. “It decries all external restraint in education and it condemns all unnecessary formalities in education.” 5
