•Tobridgetheruralcoveragegapbothforbroadband
penetrationandvoice,GovernmentofIndiahas
approvedthesettingupofNationalOpticalFiberNetwork
(NOFN)on25/10/211toprovideconnectivityto2,50,000
GramPanchayatsofthecountry,whichwouldensure
broadbandconnectivitywithadequatebandwidth.
•Thisistobeachievedutilizingtheexistingopticalfiberof
PSUs(BSNL,RailtelandPowerGrid)andlaying
incrementalfibretoconnecttoGramPanchayats
wherevernecessary.

•TheprojectisaCentre-Statecollaborativeproject,withthe
statescontributingfreeRightsofwayforestablishingthe
opticalfibrenetwork.Thethree-phaseimplementationofthe
BharatNetprojectisasfollows:
–FirstPhaseprovidesonelakhGramPanchayatswith
broadbandconnectivitybylivingundergroundopticfibre
cable(OFC)linesbyDecember2017.
–SecondPhaseprovideconnectivitytoalltheGram
Panchayatsinthecountryusinganoptimalmixof
undergroundfibre,fibreoverpowerlines,radioandsatellite
media.ItistobecompletedbyMarch2019.
–ThirdPhasefrom2019to2023,astate-of-the-artfuture
proofnetwork,includingfibrebetweendistrictsandblocks,
withringtopologytoprovideredundancywouldbecreated.

•TheGPONstandarddiffersfromotherPONstandardsin
thatitachieveshigherbandwidthandhigherefficiency
usinglarger,variable-lengthpackets.GPONoffersefficient
packagingofusertraffic,withframesegmentationallowing
higherqualityofservice(QoS)fordelay-sensitivevoiceand
videocommunicationstraffic.
