•Tobridgetheruralcoveragegapbothforbroadband
penetrationandvoice,GovernmentofIndiahas
approvedthesettingupofNationalOpticalFiberNetwork
(NOFN)on25/10/211toprovideconnectivityto2,50,000
GramPanchayatsofthecountry,whichwouldensure
broadbandconnectivitywithadequatebandwidth.
•Thisistobeachievedutilizingtheexistingopticalfiberof
PSUs(BSNL,RailtelandPowerGrid)andlaying
incrementalfibretoconnecttoGramPanchayats
wherevernecessary.

NOFN Implementation
•TheprojectisaCentre-Statecollaborativeproject,withthe
statescontributingfreeRightsofwayforestablishingthe
opticalfibrenetwork.Thethree-phaseimplementationofthe
BharatNetprojectisasfollows:
–FirstPhaseprovidesonelakhGramPanchayatswith
broadbandconnectivitybylivingundergroundopticfibre
cable(OFC)linesbyDecember2017.
–SecondPhaseprovideconnectivitytoalltheGram
Panchayatsinthecountryusinganoptimalmixof
undergroundfibre,fibreoverpowerlines,radioandsatellite
media.ItistobecompletedbyMarch2019.
–ThirdPhasefrom2019to2023,astate-of-the-artfuture
proofnetwork,includingfibrebetweendistrictsandblocks,
withringtopologytoprovideredundancywouldbecreated.

designedanddevelopedbyC-DOTandmanufactured
domestically

•InNOFNthetechnologycalledGPONwillbeutilised.
•Apassiveopticalnetwork(PON)isanetworkarchitecture
thatbringsfibercablingandsignalstothehomeusinga
point-to-multipointschemethatenablesasingleoptical
fibertoservemultiplepremises.
•TheGPONstandarddiffersfromotherPONstandardsin
thatitachieveshigherbandwidthandhigherefficiency
usinglarger,variable-lengthpackets.GPONoffersefficient
packagingofusertraffic,withframesegmentationallowing
higherqualityofservice(QoS)fordelay-sensitivevoiceand
videocommunicationstraffic.
•ThemaincomponentsofGPONtechnologyareOLT,
ONT/ONU,Splitters,OFcablesetc.

thehighspeedbroadbandfrom256Kbpsto100Mbps,
IPTVhavingdifferenttypeofcontentslikeHDTVandfuture
coming3DTVandrangeofvoicetelephonyservices.It
providesacomprehensivesolutionfortheIPleasedline,
internet,ClosedUserGroup(CUG),MPLS-VPN,VoIP,video
conferencing,videocallsetcwhatevertheservices
availableontheinternetplatform,bandwidthondemand
canbedeliveredbythisconnectivitytothewithout
changingtheaccessfiberandhomedevice.
