KUB- Kidneys, Ureters, Bladder
An x-ray taken of the abdomen that shows the kidneys,
ureters, and bladder
Used to determine the size, location, shape, and
malformation of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder
Used to detect kidney stones and other gastrointestinal
disorders
A KUB is usually a single x-ray procedure. The patient
lies flat on his back on an x-ray table and an x-ray plate
is placed underneath them near the small of the back,
and the x-ray camera is aimed at his abdomen. The
patient is asked to hold his breath and lie still while the
x- ray is taken.
Example of KUB

arrows show an
example of two large
stones in the upper and
lower ureters
GU- Genitourinary
Genitourinary system refers to the
reproductive organs and the urinary system
Main function is to filter and remove waste
from the body
Waste materials result in the production and
excretion of urine from the body

and the Male GU on the right
CRF- Chronic Renal Failure
A gradual or permanent loss of kidney function over time
Happens gradually usually months to years
With loss of kidney function, there is an accumulation of
water; waste; and toxic substances, in the body, that are
normally excreted by the kidney. Loss of kidney function
also causes other problems such as anemia, high blood
pressure, acidosis disorders of cholesterol and fatty
acids, and bone disease.
As kidneys begin to worsen patients will have to begin
dialysis to replace the functions of their kidneys

ESWL-
Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy
This is a technique that uses high-pressure
sound waves that can be focused on a very
small area, thereby fracturing small solid
objects such as gallstones or kidney stones.
The small fragments can then pass more
easily, and harmlessly, into the intestine or
can be dissolved with medications.

BUN- Blood urea nitrogen
A BUN test measures the amount of nitrogen
in your blood that comes from the waste
product urea
This test is done to see how well your
kidneys are functioning
If your kidneys are unable to remove urea
from your blood normally your BUN level will
rise
