CHAPTER- 1 Introduction to Tourist Behavior Endalamaw Kindie (BA, MA, in Tourism Management, PhD Fellow, in Marketing Management)

Tourist Behavior Tourist Is anyone who travels to places other than the one in which his habitual residence, outside of their everyday environment, for a period of at least one night & less than a year and whose usual purpose is different from the exercise of any remunerated activity in the place to which he goes.

Tourist Behavior Behavior in its widest psychological sense, the term behavior means for the observable activities as well as the mental processes guiding and resulting from social life

Tourist Behavior The study of tourist behavior draws on the disciplines of psychology, sociology and anthropology but is most dependent on the emerging specialism on tourism studies.

Tourist Behavior the observable activities of tourists and the mental processes leading to resulting from their experiences in a destination setting.

Tourist Behavior The study of tourist behavior has to be differentiated & is different from consumer behavior one of the major problems seen in the study of tourist behavior is that of the sin of homogenization

Importance of understanding of tourist behaviour Tourist behaviour is a key factor for the successful development of tourism services, therefore an understanding and knowledge of tourist behaviour is an indispensable element in the development of tourism. Knowing the behaviour of tourists has practical value for all tourism stakeholders (Pearce, 2005).

Importance of understanding of tourist behaviour Tourist behaviour in the context of consumer behaviour is the purchase, uptake and abandonment of tourist services. Services are considered to be intangible, which makes them more difficult to market.

Importance of understanding of tourist behaviour In today’s highly competitive and global economy, understanding tourist behaviour is imperative to success. Understanding tourists/travellers is even more important as they appear to be still more demanding and changeable, and to show complex preference structures and decision patterns.

Importance of understanding of tourist behaviour In brief, tourist behaviour has become a cornerstone of any marketing strategy and action. Choosing, buying, and consuming tourism/travel products and services involves a range of psychosocial processes and a number of personal and environmental influences that researchers and managers should take into account.

Tourist behavior and consumer behavior Consumer behaviour generally focuses on the activities people undertake when obtaining, consuming, and disposing of products and services. In line with such a focus, most consumer behaviour models consist of three stages: pre-purchase, consumption, and post consumption

Tourist behavior and consumer behavior There are several critical dimensions that create differences between tourist behavior and consumer behavior. One of such differences lies in the extended phases that surround tourist activities.

Tourist behavior and consumer behavior Clawson and Knetsch identified five such differences. They noted: 1. An anticipation or pre purchase; 2. A travel to the site segment; 3. An onsite experience; 4. A return travel component; 5. An extended recall and recollection component

A professional approach: Ethic-Emic distinction there are multiple perspectives on behavior one aspect arising out of research in linguistics and anthropology is the Ethic-Emic disciplines

A professional approach: Ethic-Emic distinction Emic approach is the one that takes the perspectives of the participant- the person engaging in the behavior ethic approach where the researcher, as an observer and outsider, classifies and describes the tourists’ behavior

Expressions with in the field DISCUSS Tourist Consumer customer User Client Guest

Expressions with in the field ‘Tourist’ has its own definitional problem In WTO diplomats, military personnel, and refugees, people in transit, nomads and migrants aren’t included. it is not complete for the study of tourist behavior because it provides no guidance on how domestic tourists should be classified.

Expressions with in the field ‘Consumer’ is also another widely used term in literature. It refers to people in both public and private areas who are involved in the purchasing and experiencing of products

Expressions with in the field ‘User’ user is valuable when discussing individual who may travel along a highway and use open access to public facilities such as the rest area

Expressions with in the field ‘Client’ is usually reserved for professional services there are legal clients and clients for financial services it is quite common for the word client to be used in the sex trade, too
