Have you tried comparing the stars in a cloudless sky at night? How do they differ in size, color and brightness? STARS

CHARACTERISTICS OF STARS

- are massive and luminous balls of flaming gases, made up of mostly hydrogen and some helium. STARS Sun – the nearest stars on earth, which is the source of the most energy on earth.

Viewing Stars Stars can be viewed using a telescope. Hubble Space Telescope – one of the most famous telescopes made by the United States National Aeronautics and Space or NASA. - named after American astronomist Edwin Hubble.

Two of the largest telescopes found in the Philippines are found in Quezon City: One is in Manila observatory, found inside the campus of the Ateneo de Manila University. b) The other one is in PAG-ASA Astronomical laboratory found inside the campus of University of the Philippines. Viewing Stars

Sun – has a diameter of about 1,392,000 km, or 109 times about the diameter of our planet. Star Sizes White dwarfs – about one hundredth the radius of the sun. Neutron stars – measure only about 24 km across. Red super giant – the largest. May have the radius of 1,000 solar radii.

Stars are also grouped together using spectral classification. Star Colors Example O type star - has a color blue and its temperature is over 30,000 degree Celsius. B type star - is blue-white and is temperature is over 30,000 degree Celsius.

A type star - is white and is about 7,500 to 10,000 degrees Celsius. F Type star – is yellow-white but it is about 6,000 to 7,500 degree Celsius. G Type star – is yellow and is about 5,000 to 6,000 degrees Celsius ( the sun is a G star). K Type star – is orange and is about 3,500 to 5,000 degrees Celsius. M Type star – is red and is less than 3,500 degree Celsius. The duller the color of the star is, the cooler it is.

A ll the stars are separated from each other at distances of lightyears . Lightyear is a unit measurement defined by the distance that light can travel in one year. Brightness of Stars Astronomers devised two different systems to tell how bright a star is. Apparent magnitude scale tells how bright a star is as it appears on earth. Absolute magnitude scale tells how bright the star really is.

Magnitude – is the term astronomers use to measure the brightness of a star. Brightness of Stars The brightest stars are first magnitude stars. The dimmest stars are the sixth magnitude stars.

The Life Cycle of a Star Stars are born in nebulae ( in singular form, it is nebula ). Y oung stars undergo further collapse, forming a main sequence stars . An expanded star is a Red giant or supergiant Eventually collapse and explode and become either of the three : a white dwarf, a neutron star or a black hole.
