Charcoal Drawings

Types of Charcoal Powdered Charcoal Powdered charcoal is used to: create tonal values usually over larger surfaces easily erases and can be darkened by adding layers.

Types of Charcoal Compressed Charcoal Powdered with gum binder round or square sticks charcoal pencils.

Types of Charcoal Vine Charcoal * Vine charcoal is willow or linden/ Tilia twigs burnt into: soft medium hard consistencies

Types of Charcoal Pure Charcoal Very soft Very dark tones Very messy!

Types of Charcoal White Charcoal Harder than black charcoal Different from chalk (makes a harder line)

Accessories Kneaded eraser Gum/Rubber Earser Tortillons (blending stump) Tortillons Kneaded Erasers

Elements of Art: Line Continuous mark going in any direction Lines can show movement, texture, direction, and are expressive

Line

Element of Art: Contrast The difference between two things, in this case light and shadow. Extreme contrasts in drawing are called “Chiaroscuro”

Chiaroscuro an Italian term that means “light and dark.” In pictorial arts it refers to a gradual transition of values used to achieve the illusion of how light and shadow interact on three-dimensional forms.

Contrast Where is the light source? Light source is very important in chiaroscuro- creates ‘drama’

Element of Art: Space In art, space is important. How will you create a sense of space? It is the area around and in between things.

Element of Art: Space We call the background ‘negative space’ ; and the object ‘positive space’

Space We want to create a dynamic composition- never center the object. Having it ‘go off the page’ and making the viewer’s eye move around are much more interesting to look at.

Element of Art: Form Form refers to the 3D shape the object shows. In order to get a 3D form on a 2D surface, you must use shading techniques that trick the eye into seeing an actual form.

Techniques Shading/Blending

Techniques Stippling - using dots to create value Hatching - using lines to create value Cross-hatching - using crossed lines to create value

Bone Drawings For this project, you will have to ‘think in black and white’ while drawing. (You are filling in white areas AND dark areas) You will be drawing bones- and you can make them abstract or recognizable.

Bone Drawings

Requirements You will be creating 2 drawings Your bone drawing must be off-center and an interesting composition You must use line, blending, chiaroscuro, and shadow You must make it look 3D You must make good use of the space. You will be using black AND white charcoal VIdeo
