Concept of Childhood The word childhood means the state of being a child . When we were called ‘children’ and have experienced the phase called ‘ childhood ’ . As teachers or prospective teachers, we need to develop a familiarity with experiences of children Till the end of the twentieth century the idea of childhood as a separate social category had been paid very little attention .
Can we ‘define’ childhood ? / Can we ‘define’ child? Children are: innocent , God’s gift, pure and sweet , cute, playful , childish, funny, idiot , naughty , protected, soft, fearful But these do not explain children’s experiences. Since experiences of children are di ffer en t, it would be incorrect to think of children a s on e category, and attribute one single ‘defi niti on’ of childhood.
