BACKGROUND OF THE AUTHOR Amadis Ma. Guerrero was born in Ermita on April 15, 1941. He studied in Ateneo de Manila and completed his bachelor’s degree in the Univeristy of Santo Tomas. He wrote for Graphic Magazine. He published his work in some magazines. And in later life he was writing for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He was a short-story writer, author, and a cultural-travel journalist. He has published numerous books of short stories, travel essays, and deluxe volumes on Philippine Art and Culture. His short story “Children of the City” is a departure from his usual style. It won a third prize in Palanca Awards in 1971.

THE WRITER’S LIFE Amadis Ma. Guerrero  He was a passionate writer of numerous books just like short stories, essays and other works that he published. He was a short-story writer, author and a cultural-travel journalist who contributes regularly to the Lifestyle/Arts-Theater sections of the Inquirer. He was 70 years old when he written the piece “Children of the City”.

THE WRITER’S CULTURE He wrote the piece in 1971 and won a third prize in the Palanca Memorial Awards.  During this time, society exhibits various forms of maltreatment and abuse towards the lower class or poor people. Guerrero wrote for Graphic Magazine. He also wrote and published his work in various other magazines, such as Leader, Women's Home Companion, and Ellery Queen's Mystery At a later age, he started writing for the national newspaper, The Philippine Daily Inquirer. People’s culture at this time comprises a blend of traditional Filipino and Spanish Catholic traditions, with influences from America and other parts of Asia.

CHARACTERS Victor - is the central character of the story. At the age of eight, he loses his father and his mother abandons him for some other man. He is hired as a newsboy by his uncle and starts his life on the streets. Victor’s Dad - A good-natured man and a loving father to Victor, he was a part of a worker’s strike. The man loved his son dearly and his death brought a huge blow to Victor. Victor’s Mom - She loved Victor’s dad but never cared felt any affection for her son. She took her husband’s death grievously. Tio Pedring - Victor’s uncle, he adopted Victor after the leaving of his sister. He forces Victor to become a newspaper boy. Nacio - He is a newspaper boy. He was Victor’s new friend. Though full of cruel vices, Victor took his death as another major loss.

EXPOSITION RISING ACTION CLIMAX FALLING ACTION RESOLUTION The story revolved on a young boy, Victor, an eight year old boy who lived in a shanties. The story started when his father was involved in a company menace because of unjust salaries and compensations. His father joined the employee’s strike, and there he met his death when he was shot by the police officers managing the chaos in the strike. Victor was shocked to know the sudden death of his father in a newspaper. He and his mother were in deep pain upon hearing his father’s death. Soon, her mother had a new husband, She left Victor to his Tio Pedring . There, he was trained to be a newspaper boy in the dangerous streets of Avenida. In those dark street he learned how to curse-say bad words and smoke cigarette because he was influenced by a group of unmannered teenagers. He found himself alone in the street, sometimes being beat up by bullies. And Victor, swirled the life of the city: this city, flushed with triumphant charity campaigns and seems captivating for those who have not tasted city life. The story ended when the author realized how cruel the world can be. How people like Victor don’t get the exact budget they need for them to survive. While the rich become richer.
