Controlling Tools of Chitta Vrittis Based on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras

Introduction • Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras describe the fluctuations of the mind (Chitta Vrittis). • Controlling them is essential for inner peace and self-realization. • Abhyasa (Practice) and Vairagya (Detachment) are the key methods.

Types of Chitta Vrittis (YS 1.5-1.11) • प्रमाण (Pramāṇa) – Right Knowledge • विपर्यय (Viparyaya) – Misconception • विकल्प (Vikalpa) – Imagination • निद्रा (Nidrā) – Sleep • स्मृति (Smṛti) – Memory

Definition of Chitta Vrittis योगसूत्र १. Translation: The mental modifications are of five types; some cause suffering, while others do not.

Methods to Control Chitta Vrittis (YS 1.12) योगसूत्र १. Translation: The fluctuations of the mind are controlled through practice (Abhyasa) and detachment (Vairagya).

Translation: Practice is the continuous effort to maintain steadiness. Translation: Practice becomes firmly grounded when performed for a long duration with sincerity and enthusiasm.

Translation: Detachment is the mastery over the desire for seen or heard pleasures. Translation: The highest form of detachment arises from the realization of the true self beyond all qualities.

Conclusion • Controlling Chitta Vrittis leads to inner calmness and spiritual growth. • Patanjali emphasizes Abhyasa (Practice) and Vairagya (Detachment) as the key tools. • Consistent effort and detachment help in self-realization and mental stability.
