Chlamydia 1. Ocular Infections: Chlamydia trachomatis causes: Trachoma and inclusion conjunctivitis. 2. Genital Infections : 3. Respiratory Infections :

Trachoma and inclusion conjunctivitis. Trachoma characterized by development of follicles and inflamed conjunctivae. Cornea becomes cloudy and vascularized; repeated infections common cause of blindness. Inclusion conjunctivitis is a milder inflammatory conjuctival infection with purulent discharge.

Genital Infections : C trachomatis strains cause genital infections, including Non Gonococcal Uretheritis ( NGU ) in men and acute salpingitis and cervicitis in women. LGV I , 2 & 3 cause Lymphogranuloma venereum , a venereal disease with genital lesions and regional lymph node involvement (buboes). Some

Respiratory Infections : Chlamydia psittaci usually causes an influenza like illness called psittacosis. Chlamydia pneumoniae (TWAR organism ) causes atypical pneumonitis in humans.

Chlamydia trachomatis Inoculated into the eye by contaminated fingers or fomites in neonates, by passage through an infected birth canal . Genital infections are spread sexually , respiratory infections by inhalation.

Though symptoms of Chlamydia usually mild or absent, serious complications cause irreversible damage, including infertility occur ing "silently" before a woman ever recognizes a problem. Chlamydia also can cause discharge from the penis of an infected man.

Prevention and Control Avoid promiscuous behavior Prefer monogamous intimate relationship with screened partners. Condoms Safe sex practices Treatment of patients and of contacts also Sex education

Treatment Tetracycline and erythromycin are the drugs of choice. Penicillin is not effective.

Clinical manifestations of chlamydial infections. .
