LOCATION OF STUDY AREA

There are many opinion to growth of siliguri urban region. But there are two main opinion about the origin of The name siliguri . 1st opinion: That is derived from the word ‘shill’ meaning small stone. Its said name originated from the broken boulders Which lie scattered in the mahananda river. 2 nd opinion: That means ‘A place with sal tress’. ORIGIN AND GROWTH

DEMOGRAPHY Based on Census data of 2011, the city has a population of 705,579, while the population of Siliguri UA/Metropolitan is 1,057,438.[2][3] Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. In Siliguri , 10% of the population is under six years of age. Due to the city's booming economy, it has drawn people from Bihar, Jharkhand, North Bengal, North-East, Sikkim and other parts of India in search of livelihood. Siliguri also has a large population of Tibetans and a notable number of Bhutanese permanently settled in the city.[5]

Factors of growth Urbanization has been now felt pervasively over the entire world (Davies, 1981). It has now become a prime phenomenon of Siliguri Municipal Corporation now because sizable proportion of the population now lives in the corporation. Subsequently in 1981 Siliguri Women’s college, in 1987, Kalipada Ghosh Terai Mahavidyalaya in Bagdogra and in 1998, and 1962, Surya Sen College and North Bengal University, that is, the only university in the entire region, was established at a place called Shivmandir near Siliguri . The place was officially renamed as Raja Rammohanpur , but the old name still persists. The Medical College and Hospital was established in 1967.

The Siliguri Municipal Corporation was incorporated in 1994 with a total area of 26.37 km2 under its jurisdiction. The area not only covered the 15.54 km2 of the erstwhile Siliguri Municipality but also included a part of the area from Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts. Today it is arguably the second most important corporation area in the .

Siliguri have now become as much a centre of sociocultural activities as the town is a cosmopolitan in nature. It is comprised of Bhutia , Marwari, Bengali, Bihari and Nepali people with substantial portion of Rajbanshi , the original inhabitant of the area. Since the emergence as an urban centre, sharp increase of population concentration in Corporation has been noticed. As Siliguri , being a centre of trade and commerce in the region, has great prospects for consumer goods industries like bakery and confectionary, biscuits, sports goods, incense sticks, mineral water, soaps, chalk and pencils, digital clocks etc., can have a huge market and even small entrepreneurs can take advantage of this opportunity. It has already been mentioned that there are only 4- urban centres in the district, viz., Darjeeling, Kurseoung, Kalimpong and Siliguri . Of these 4- centres Darjeeling was systematically built up by the British as the Summer Capital of Bengal due to its bracing climate. URBAN SETTLEMENT PATTERN

Kurseoung located in between Darjeeling and the foothills was developed to perform certain administrative functions. During 1901-31, the urban population of the district was doubled. With the inclusion of more areas within the district in 1931, two new towns have come into existence the district, Kalimpong and Siliguri .

SLUM AREA OF SILIGURI Ranabasti and Sraban Nagar :- asti college has identified Ranabasti and Sraban Nagar slums of wards 18 and 20 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation, which are located within 4 km of the Salesian College Siliguri Campus. The people of the area come from Bangladesh, Nepal and Bihar and very few are from neighbouring districts like Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and from the surroundings of Siliguri . There are over 600 families in this area. The people are typically wage labourers, van pullers, rickshaw pullers and private car drivers. Some of the women are servants in the neighbouring households, and a few are vegetable sellers in local markets
