C ommon name: Cigarette beetle S cientific name:  Lasioderma serricorne Coleoptera : Anobiidae

Some were found in dried resin from the tomb of Egyptian King Tutankhamen. The cigarette beetle is pan-tropical but can be found worldwide, especially wherever dried tobacco in the form of leaves, cigars, cigarettes, or chewing tobacco is stored.

Description  ADULT 2 to 3 mm  Reddish brown Rounded , oval shape Head is often concealed by the pronotum   They are most active at dusk and will continue activity through the night.

Antennae of the cigarette beetle are serrated. Elytra  cigarette beetle are smooth . Most damaging pest of stored tobacco Major pest of many stored food products including flours, dry mixes, dried fruits such as dates and raisins, cereals, cocoa, coffee beans, herbs, spices, nuts, rice

Larvae Older larvae are white, scarab-like, and hairy . An arolium is also present and extends beyond the middle of the claw on each tarsus.

Life Cycle

Damage  Larval feeding causes direct damage to foodstuffs and non-food items. Beetles chewing through cardboard boxes, containers, and packaging cause indirect damage. Cocoons are often attached to a solid substrate and in severe infestations form large clusters. Larvae will sometimes bore their way through cardboard boxes and other packaging in search of a place to pupate.

Its larvae are also known as bookworms . Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel under the binding cover, and it proceeds to tunnel up to 10 centimeters into the paper text, where it pupates into an adult beetle. The adult leaves a round exit hole, as well as powdered paper on the shelf.

Management Use of methoprene Sticky traps baited with the female cigarette beetle sex pheromone, serricornin .  A temperature of approximately 50°C (122°F) maintained for 24 to 36 hours is needed for effective control.
