What is a Circle? β’ A closed curve where all points are equal distance from center. β’ Fixed point is the center. β’ Distance from center to any point is the radius.
TERMS ASSOCIATED WITH CIRCLE Interior and exterior of a Circle Interior of the circle. The set of all points inside the circle (distance from the center is less than the radius). Example: If the radius is 5 cm, any point less than 5 cm from the center lies in the interior. Exterior of the circle. The set of all points outside the circle (distance from the center is greater than the radius). Example: Any point more than 5 cm from the center lies in the exterior.
2. CIRCULAR REGION : The circular region refers to the entire area enclosed by a circle β including both the boundary (circumference) and the interior points. 3. RADIUS β distance from center to any point. 4. DIAMETER β chord through center (2 Γ radius). 5. CHORD β joins any two points on the circle. 6. CIRCUMFERENCE Distance around the circle.
7. SECANT A line that cuts the circle at two distinct points. 8. TANGENT A line that touches the circle at exactly one point. Perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact. 9 .ARC An arc of a circle is a part of the circumference of the circle between two distinct points on it. Minor arc β the shorter arc between two points. Major arc β the longer arc between the same two points.
10. SEMI-CIRCLE A semi-circle is half of a circle . It is formed when a diameter divides a circle into two equal parts . 11. SEMI-CIRCULAR REGION A semi-circular region is the area enclosed by a semi-circle . 12. ANGLE SUBTENDED BY AN ARC The angle subtended by an arc refers to the angle formed at a point (either inside or outside the circle) by lines drawn from that point to the endpoints of the arc.
13. Segment of a circle A segment of a circle is the region bounded by a chord and the corresponding arc of the circle. Types of segments: Minor Segment Formed by the shorter arc and its chord. Smaller region of the circle. Major Segment Formed by the longer arc and the same chord. Larger region of the circle.
14. SECTOR OF CIRCLE A sector of a circle is the region bounded by two radii and the arc between them β it looks like a βslice of pizza.β Types of sectors: Minor Sector Enclosed by the smaller arc and its two radii. Major Sector Enclosed by the larger arc and its two radii. 15. QUADRANT OF CIRCLE. A quadrant of a circle is one-fourth of a circle , formed when two perpendicular diameters divide the circle into four equal parts .
