Cisco Meraki Administration Pilot summary and the way forward 09.10.2018

Why run a Meraki Administrator Pilot ? Our ICT colleagues in the field has requested to be allowed administrator access for a long time. We have received requests from managers in the field that would like to see that the ICT personnel onsite has administrator rights to the Meraki Network equipment. Giving administrator rights to field ICT colleagues could potentially lead to free up time for HO staff to focus on other tasks.

The pilot process Jordan ICT Coordinator Abdallah Salman together with HO ICT Max Lotternes and Elisabeth Johnsen developed a SOP for administration access to Meraki Dashboard. The main objective for the SOP was to «Safeguarding the information of staff and NRC that is available through the Meraki dashboard and ensuring management and network functions.» Jordan ICT Abdallah Salman passed and presented HO ICT the Cisco Meraki CMNO certificate. Jordan Head of Support, CD and ICT Coordinator all signed the SOP : Meraki Administration. 3rd of April 2018 Jordan ICT Coordinator Abdallah Salman was given Administration right to all Cisco Meraki Network Equipment in Jordan ( Not Mero Office ).

Change log

Jordan ICT thoughts after the Pilot Did not make any great configuration changes during the pilot, mainly changing the uplink speed, the per-client limit, fixed IP assignment, adding links to the traffic shaping rules. Did not encounter any problems while making configuration changes on the Meraki Dashboard. Effective immediate changes without having to open a Zendesk ticket and wait for response from HO. It felt very positive and empowering to have Administrator rights !

Jordan ICT thoughts after the Pilot ICT staff n eed to have a general basic network understanding in order to pass the CMNO. The CMNO is an good way of measuring network qualifications. It is easy to make mistakes in the Meraki Dashboard if you do not understand what you are doing. Believe that all NRC offices would benefit from having local ICT staff administrate each local network. ( As long as they have the right qualifications ).

HO ICT thoughts after the Pilot The pilot was conducted without any known negative issues as anticipated. Did not receive any request for help from Abdallah during the pilot. In retrospect the pilot should have been conducted with other representatives for other offices as well, to get different views.

Possible issues Will all ICT staff will be able to pass the CMNO certification? Some ICT staff will require more guidance than other – potentially creating more work to ICT HO ? Will this mean that NRC are moving even further away from having a general Baseline configuration ? Will this empower ICT staff in the field ?

Meraki Administrator – Next step The decision has been made to grant Meraki Administrators rights to Local ICT Staff. Administrator Rights will be granted based on trust and knowledge: Meraki Administration document Signed by CD / HoS Pass the CMNO Certification.

CMNO Certification https:// meraki.cisco.com/webinars/cmno CMNO (Certified Meraki Network Operator) is a full-day virtual training & certification program lead by Meraki Trainers. It is designed to support Meraki network operators. The 8-hour course includes instructor-led presentation and live demos, as well as guided lab exercises on the 6-product Meraki full stack . At the end of the training, participants have the opportunity to achieve CMNO certification by passing a timed 20-question exam. The exam gauges understanding of the fundamental Meraki configuration and troubleshooting best practices taught during the training. Part I: Training & Lab Practice The training portion of the course is instructor-led and includes presentations, live demos of the Meraki environment, and guided lab practice Part II: Certification At the end of the training, all participants will take a 45-minute assessment with 20 questions. The timed exam tests a candidates knowledge and skills related to the specific topics covered in the training. Participants must earn a passing score on the exam to receive CMNO certification (80 % )
