Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER)

Claim-Evidence-Reasoning   or   CER a writing strategy that can develop a student’s analytical thinking and argumentative writing skills to turn that “I don’t know” into “aha, so that’s why we got those results in the lab.”

What exactly is CER, and how does it work? CER all starts with a question asked by the teacher. This question is based on a phenomena or lab experience. The student’s explanation or answer, as you may have guessed, will consist of three parts: a claim, the evidence, and the student’s reasoning.

Claim-Evidence-Reasoning example

LEARNING COMPETENCIES INSTRUCTIONS: Read the given article. Then answer the following: QUESTION: Who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? YOUR CLAIM OR ANSWER: Friar Laurence is most to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Cite from the article two evidences that support your claim: EVIDENCE 1: “ In the play, Friar Laurence says to Juliet, ‘Take thou this vial, being then in bed/ And this distilled liquor drink thou off;/ …The roses in thy lips and cheeks shall fade/ … And in this borrow’d likeness of shrunk death/ Thou shalt continue two and forty hours,/And then awake as from a pleasant sleep’ (4.1.93-106).” EVIDENCE 2: Explain how your evidence supports your claim. REASONING: My chosen evidence supports my claim because… This quote shows that Friar Laurence is the originator of the plan for the two lovers to fake their deaths. Had he not posed this plan, Romeo could not have mistaken Juliet for dead. Thus, he would never have committed suicide, nor Juliet. As the adult in the situation, Friar Laurence should have acted less rashly and helped the couple find a more suitable solution to their problems.
