2. HOT AND COLD In our day to day life we come across various objects. We see some are hot and some are cold . The measure of degree of hotness or coldness of a substance is called its Temperature . The device that is used to measure the temperature of a substance is called Thermometer .

3. MEASURING TEMPERATURE There are two types of thermometer : 1. Clinical Thermometer 2. Laboratory Thermometer The thermometer that measures our body temperature is called as Clinical Thermometer . A clinical thermometer consists of long , narrow , uniform glass tube . It has bulb at end . That bulb contain mercury . It also has kink .

4. MEASURING TEMPERATURE The scale in which the temperature is measured is Celsius and Fahrenheit scale . The clinical thermometer reads from 35 degree celsius to 42 degree celsius . The normal human body temperature is 37 degree celsius .

5. READING A THERMOMETER Wash the thermometer with antiseptic solution . Hold it firmly and give it a few jerks . The jerks will give the level of mercury down. Ensure that it falls below 35 Degree C . Now place the bulb of thermometer under your tongue . After a minute take the thermometer out and note the temperature . The temperature will be your body temperature While reading keep the thermometer parallel to the eyes.

6. PRECAUTIONS WHILE READING THERMOMETER Thermometer should be washed after and before use. Ensure that mercury level is below 35 degree Celsius . Do not hold the thermometer by bulb while reading it . Hold the thermometer with care . Read the thermometer keeping the level of mercury along line of sight .

7. IS THE BODY TEMPERATURE OF EVERY PERSON 37 DEGREE CELSIUS ? No , it could be slightly lower or higher . IMPORTANT NOTES The clinical thermometer measures only human temperature . The temperature never goes below 35 degree celsius and never goes above 42 degree celsius .

8. DEFINITIONS TEMPERATURE : The measure of degree of hotness or coldness of a substance is called as Temperature . THERMOMETER : The device that is used to measure the temperature of a substance is called as Thermometer . CLINICAL THERMOMETER : Thermometer that measures human body temperature is called as Clinical Thermometer .

At last we learnt about all the definitions that we studied throughout the session .
