Pluralization Of Irregular Nouns

Review: Give the plural form of the following: House – blanket - Field – president - Cupboard - plumber - What kind of nouns are they? How do they form their plural?

Presentation: Read the poem, The Funny Languange ” FUNNY LANGUAGE We’ll begin with box, the plural is boxes But the plural of ox should be oxen not oxes One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese Yet the plural of moose could never be meese . You may find a lone mouse, or a whole rest of mice But the plural of house is houses, not hice If the plural of man should always be men Why is the plural of pan, pans and not pen?

The cow in the plural maybe called cows or kine But the plural of vow is vows never vine If I speak at a foot and you show your two feet When I give you a boot, will a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth Why is the plural of booth called booths We speak of brother, make it two becomes brethren

But though we say mother, we never say methren . Is it true that English can confuse you and me? I would love to discover the farther side of thee Learning the language would be fun, you will see  We’ll deal with English as funny as can be.

What is the poem all about? If the plural of box is boxes, is the plural of ox, oxes ? If goose the plural is geese, will the plural of moose be meese ? If the plural of mouse is mice, is the plural of house a hice ? Presenting Examples:

Can you give nouns that form their plural by changing some of the letters within a word? Do we add –s or – es to form their plural? If not, how are these nouns called? DISCUSSION:

Give nouns from the poem which are irregular. Notice how these nouns form their plural. Discuss what an irregular noun is and how they form their plural. Have them notice how the nouns in the chart form their plural. DISCUSSION:

In few words, the mid-word vowels are changed to form the plural. SINGULAR PLURAL mouse mice  foot feet  tooth teeth  goose geese  louse lice

SINGULAR FORM (NO CHANGE) In a few words, the singular form is used for both singular and plural. SINGULAR PLURAL fish fish deer deer sheep sheep shrimp shrimp offspring offspring series series   species species

Regular Nouns We make regular nouns plural by adding –s to the end of the word Examples: cat cats chair chairs shoe shoes However, there are many nouns that do not follow this pattern and they are called irregular nouns

Irregular Nouns There are some rules to follow for making irregular nouns plural Other irregular nouns will not follow a definite pattern and will just need to be memorized

Nouns borrowed from other languages may have foreign plural forms Examples: datum data medium media cactus cacti stimulus stimuli These nouns just need to be memorized because they do not follow a rule
