Understanding HAZARD, RISK and Exposure DECODING THE DANGER
What is HAZARD? HAZARD is the potential for harm or adverse effect on an employees health. It is anything that may cause injury or ill health to anyone at or near the workplace
What is RISK? RISK is the likelihood that a Hazard will cause injury or ill health to anyone. It is usually categorized by either HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW. The level of risk increases with the severity of hazard and the duration and frequency of exposure

What is EXPOSURE? EXPOSURE occurs when a person comes into contact with hazard CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS
PHYSICAL HAZARD Hazard that includes floors, stairs, work platforms, steps , ladders, fire, falling objects, slippery surfaces , manual handling, excessive loud and prolonged noise, vibration, heat and cold, radiation, poor lighting, ventilation and air quality .

MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL HAZARD Hazard that includes electricity, machinery, equipment, pressure vessels, dangerous goods, forklifts, cranes, and hoist.

CHEMICAL HAZARD Hazard that includes substances such as acids or poisons and those that could lead to fire or explosions like pesticides , herbicides, cleaning agents , dust and fumes.
