Classroom Management Skills & Student Engagement in Overcrowded Classes Brief by The Regional Focal Person MRS. FAUZIA BANO Principal FGPS No.1 Boys Zarar Shaheed Road Presented by Syeda Zahra Naqvi Principal FG Public School Boys RA Bazar 13 th December, 2024
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT is the foundation of quality teaching learning efforts. PLANNING for the management of overcrowded classes is a MUST. Targets (aims and objectives +SLO ) and discipline are pivotal. Significance of being RESPONSIVE rather than REACTIVE Significance of exploring ACTIVITIES to engage students in crowded classrooms. Significance of TEACHER – STUDENT INTIMACY & TRUST and PEER MOTIVATION
Classroom Management "Classroom management is the orchestration of classroom life : planning curriculum , organizing procedures and resources , arranging the environment to maximize efficiency , monitoring student progress, and anticipating potential problems. It includes both the preventive measures to establish a productive learning environment and responsive strategies to deal with challenges as they arise." — Carolyn M. Evertson and Edmund T. Emmer , Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers
Classroom Management Organizing the classroom to create an environment conducive to learning. Establishing rules and consistently following them to maintain discipline Creating a positive learning environment by managing behavior effectively Interactive classroom teaching to improve student engagement and achievement Build a respectful and collaborative atmosphere by managing disruptive behavior
Challenges of Overcrowded Classrooms Common challenges faced by teachers: Limited individual attention Discipline Physical space constraints Difficulty in monitoring behavior Hindered student-teacher relationship Managing diverse needs
Activity I: Encourage collaboration and solution-focused thinking . Situation II: A student begins to talk loudly and distract others during a group activity. Soon, other students join in, making it hard for the teacher to regain control. Propose 2–3 strategies to address the disruption without stopping the lesson entirely and suggest how to prevent similar situations in the future. Situation I: In a class of 60 students, the teacher assigns a group activity and students start talking over each other, and the teacher struggles to monitor all groups effectively. Propose 2–3 solutions for organizing group work efficiently in an overcrowded classroom and discuss tools or techniques to ensure each group stays on task and receives attention.
Impact of Overcrowding On Teachers: Stress and burnout. Difficulty in lesson delivery. O n Students: Limited participation opportunities. Struggle for personalized feedback.
Activity II Think-Pair-Share : Promote peer collaboration and critical thinking. 4 pairs of vibrant, dynamic and active teachers who can work as a team Topic "How would you engage all students in a class of 50?" Other members are a group to analyze the performance of pairs
Key Classroom Management Skills
Student Engagement Strategies Use interactive teaching methods: Group discussions. Role-plays. Quizzes Foster peer learning: Group projects.
Engaging All Learners
Activity III
Role of Positive Reinforcement
Collaborative Learning Activities Activity 1: Think-Pair-Share Step 1 : Pose an open-ended critical question (Open book & creative). Step 2 : Students think individually, discuss in pairs, and share with the class. Jigsaw Method (Science and S.St ): Divide the class into groups, assigning each member a specific part of the topic to learn and become "experts." Individual study of the assigned portion for support material. Each member teaches their portion to the class. Recognize expert students from each group and assign them to recap the whole .
