About This Presentation

Kajjali (mercury- sulphur bond) is one of the basic kalpana in Rasa shastra. Its use in various formulations is well described in rasa text. Although is single use is quite limited in clinical practice, this presentation reveals few of the uses of kajjali in single form.

WHAT IS KAJJALI ? Kajjali is chief example of Sagandha murchana of Parada (mercury) with Gandhaka (Sulphur). Mercury is ground along with sulphur and other drugs without adding any liquid media till the shininess of mercury completely disappears and black powder that looks like Kajjala ( an eye application), is obtained, is called Kajjali . VARIOUS TYPES OF KAJAALI Based on the amount of gandhaka added to mercury for making kajjali it is classified as follows- Ardha guna kajjali (half the quantity of sulphur) Sama guna kajjali (equal the quantity of sulphur ) Dvi guna kajjli (double the quantity of sulphur) Rasa tarangani 6 th chapter Dr. Somil Dubey , Tirupati

Standard criteria of kajjali Slaksnatva (fineness) Niscandratva - absence of metallic lustre which represents complete mingling of mercury into sulphur. Rek ha purnatva - getting stuck into the lines of finger when taken with thumb and index finger. Varitaratva - floating on water when a pinch of kajjali is dropped over it. Clinical uses of kajjali According to Rasatarangani Kajjali when administered with suitable vehicle helps to cure diseases and also is aphrodisiac in nature. Vomiting - along with Ela ( cardamomum ), Marica (black pepper), Musta ( cyperus rotundus ), Lavanga (cloves) and seeds of Badari ( Zyzyphus jujuba ). Abscess - along with Varunadi kasaya ( Astanga hrudya ) Erysepelas - dviguna kajjali along with leaf juice of bitter gourd. Dr. Somil Dubey , Tirupati

Cont.. R espiratory disorders- Dviguna kajjali triturated along with juice of basil leaf and than mixed with powder of Yastimadhu , Vasaka , Pipplai (Piper nigrum ), and bhitaki ( Terminali bellerica ). I ndigestion- along with citric acid and pippali churna . CONT.. S kin infection- 1 part kajjali with 2 parts of Dhatura metel leaves and than triturating with juice of Chitraka ( Plumbago zeylanica ) mixed butter is applied over the infected part. Vata - vyadhi - along with triphala powder, shuddha gugglu (gum resin of Commiphora mukul ) and eranda oil (castor oil).
