4. INTRODUCTION CHITTARANJAN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS IS THE NATION’S VISIONARIES COMING TRUE WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED ON 1950 AND STILL IT IS THE PRIDE OF INDIA. Chittaranjan Locomotive Work is a goverment -owned electric locomotive manufacturer based in India. Founded in 1950 the Indian Railway owned industrial unit is named after the Indian freedom-fighter Chittaranjan Das. The factory commenced the production of steam locomotives on the 26 January 1950, in collaboration with the North British Locomotive Company. On November 1, 1950 Indian first steam rail-engine produced by the company (a WG class locomotive) to the freedom fighter Deshbandhu Chittranjan Das.

6. GENERAL DESCRIPTION/ EQUIPMENT LAYOUT OF A LOCO The locomotive is modular in construction. Locomotive assembly consists of five main parts (Ref. Fig 2.2): - Roof Drivers cab Machine Room Bogie Frame

7. Layout of roof equipment The equipments which are on the primary side of the transformer are mounted on the roof (Ref. Fig.2.3). These equipments are:- 1. Pantograph for current collection. 2. Internal air filter panel for oil cooling unit. 3. 25 KV Bushing. 4. Surge arrester. 5. Earthing switch. 6. Vacuum circuit breaker. 7. Primary voltage transformer. 8. Resistance box for harmonic filter.

8. Layout of Driver’s cab equipment Overview of the driver’s cab is shown in fig. below  

9. Layout of machine room equipment Machine room, is between both the drivers cab with a central corridor. All the cooling blowers, main converters, auxiliary converters & control cubicles are fitted in the machine room.These equipments are fitted symmetrically on both sides of the central corridor.The detailed layout of the m/c room equipment is given in fig.

10. Layout of underframe equipment Main traction transformer, compressors, air dryer, air reservoirs and batteries are mounted in underframe of the locomotive. 12. TYPES OF BOGIE & DESCRIPTION BOGIE : - A bogie is a wheeled wagon or trolley. In mechanics terms, a bogie is a chassis or framework carrying wheels, attached to a vehicle, thus serving as a modular subassembly of wheels and axles. Bogies take various forms in various modes of transport. A bogie may remain normally attached or be quickly detachable; it may contain a suspension within it; it may be mounted on a swivel, as on a railway locomotive, or additionally jointed and sprung. At CLW two types of bogie are manufactured – Cast Bogie & Fabricated Bogie. For WAP -4 cast bogies are used & for other type of LOCO fabricated bogies are used. In the basis of axle arrangement bogies are of two types – COCO type & BOBO type. Only WAP -5 are of BOBO type & other are of COCO type.

17. Traction motor: A traction motor is an electric motor used for propulsion of a vehicle, such as an electric locomotive or electric roadway vehicle.  These motors were traditionally DC but the development of modern power and control electronics has led to the introduction of 3-phase AC motors.  Electric locomotives generally have two or more dc or ac motors. In these locomotives , power is collected from an electric trolley which is running on an overhead wire. The overhead wire can carry both types of supply ac as well as dc. Indian railway also uses both types of supply systems : (a) AC system- 25 kv single phase 50 hz ac supply (b) DC system- 1500 V dc supply CLW started Traction Motor manufacture from 1969 with Alsthom design of MG-1580 motors and TAO-659 motors and switched over to HS15250A, 850 HP Traction Motors for which technology was received from Hitachi, Japan. HS15250A Traction Motor ate-of-the-art 3- Phase Traction Motors for freight (WAG-9) and passe n ger (WAP-5 & WAP-7) locomotives. Cumulative production of Traction Motors during the year 2007-08, has touched an all time high of 1225 Traction Motors .This is the Best ever in the 53 years history of CLW .CLW has achieved the rare distinction of being the only Production Unit in the country which can cross 1000 Traction Motors production mark in a year.

18. 3-PHASE TRACTION MOTOR TYPE 6FRA6068 & 6FXA7059 : - Phase Traction Motors type 6FRA6068 for WAG-9 and WAP-7 locomotives & 6FXA7059 for WAP-5 locomotive are being manufactured indigenously by CLW since the financial year 1998-99 & 1999– 2000 respectively. With the production of 3 – phase Traction Motor, CLW has entered the era of State of the art, 3-phase technology. HITACHI TRACTION MOTOR TYPE HS15250A: - Hitachi Traction Motor is one of the most critical and vital equipment in Conventional Electric Locomotives type WAG–7 & WAP–4 under production at CLW. The production of Hitachi TM is now completely stabilized.

19. Advantages of Three phase Loco over Conventional Loco 1) Less Maintenance : - Due to use of 3Ø TM and absence of commutators , brushes, Tap Changer Shunting Contactor field resistance , traction & Braking Switches less maintenance is required. 2) Reduced Harmonics : - Due to use of Harmonic Filter Circuit. It reduces the harmonics 3) Regenerative Braking :-It is the Braking which provides Energy Saving up to 30 % for using TM as generator . 4) Track Friendly : - Due to use of regenerative braking less use of brake shoes it is more track friendly. 5) Crew Friendly : - Both in operation & trouble shooting it is crew friendly. 6) High hauling Capacity : - Due to very high power to wt. ratio this loco has very high hauling capacity. 7) Reduced Piping : - Due to use of tri plate pneumatic brake system it less piping length. 8) High Reliability : - Due to use of 3Ø Induction Motor it has higher reliability than conventional TM . 9) Under slung Compressor : -Due to under slung compressor less oil in the Machine Room , less possibility of fire hazard . 10) Flexible Computerised based electrical Control System : - Due to flexible Computerised Control System it has less no of relays, Contactors, less no of cables. 11) Static Auxiliary Converter: - Three Auxiliary Converter are provided to supply a constant voltage to auxiliary motors . 12) Fire Detection & Alarm System : -This system has smoke detector pipe which detects smoke & gives the necessary alarm . 13) Electronic Brake System : -For precise and fast control of loco this loco is best . 14) Spring loaded parking brake : - Instead of hand brake it has spring loaded parking brake system. 15) Wheel Flange Lubrication System : - This system reduces the electrical consumption and wheel wear.

20. BRAKES IN LOCO: Mainly three types of brakes are used   (a). AIR BRAKES This braking systems use compressed air as the force to push blocks on to wheels or pads on to discs. (b). REGENERATIVE BRAKES During braking, the traction motor connections are altered to turn them into electrical generators.The motor fields are connected across the main traction generator and the motor armatures are connected across the load.The rolling locomotive or multiple unit wheels turn the motor armatures, and the motors act as generators, either sending the generated current back into the supply.Regenerative braking will be working up to speed of 15 km/hr. (c ). PARKING BRAKES  In 3 phase loco hand brake are not provided. For parking the loco new type of brakes are available on this loco called parking brake.The great feature of parking brake is that it remain applied to indefinite time as per the requirement in absence of air pressure .It's function is just opposite to that of conventional brakes i.e it remains released

21. Auxiliaries Oil Cooling Blower -1&2--- To cool transformer and Power Converter 1&2 oil in cooling unit -1&2 respectively by taking air from roof. Traction Motor Blower 1&2 --To cool Bogie -1 & Bogie -2 group Traction Motors by forced air . Transformer Oil Pump 1&2 --- To circulate oil from Transformer to oil cooling unit 1&2 and back. Traction Converter Oil Pump 1&2 --- To circulate oil from Traction Converter to oil cooling unit 1&2 and back. Main Compressor 1&2 – To create MR pressure to 10.0 Kg/Cm 2 . The capacity of compressor is 1750 LPM Scavenge Blower -1&2 – To create dust from air filters of TMB 1&2 and OCB 1&2. Battery Charger --- To charge battery. Pantograph - Two pantograph are provided on either end of Loco . Design of pantograph is same as other AC loco . For raising and lowering of Pantograph one switch ZPT is provided on Panel A having 2 positions UP and DOWN Auxiliary Compressor(MCPA )-- The auxiliary compressor is used to raise the pantograph . While the control circuit is switched on , the auxiliary Compressor controlled by Pneumatic switch start automatically till the pressure reaches to 6 Kg/Cm 2 . Main Reservoir— For storage of compressed air pressure MR are provided on this loco . In WAP-7 & WAG-9 loco 2 MR & 1 AR is provided in Machine Room in vertical manner . Capacity of MR is 450 litres .Drain Cock is provided below each M R , which can be operated from Machine Room In WAP-5 MR are located in under truck and each MR having capacity of 240 litres .

22. MANUFACTURING, M&P MAINTENANCE, TRANSPORT, MACHINERY & PLANT PROCUREMENT: - Manufacturing group of shops consist of Heavy machine shop, wheel shop, light machine shop, smithy & forge shop, Heat treatment shop and tool Room, Millwright and Electrical maintenance shops l o ok after maintenance of all M&Ps of loco works, power supply and distribution inside loco works.MPP cell deals with planning and process for procurement of machines sanctioned by Rly. Board under M&P plan Head -4100 & 4200 and also look after TPT shop including road and industrial vehicle maintenance work with shunting work. M&P section deals with commissioning of new machines and issues PTC. Manufacturing shops : - Wheel Shop : - The Wheel shop manufactures Wheel Sets for loco production as well as spares to Zonal Railways. Presently wheel sets for WAP-4, WAP-5, WAP-7, WAG-7 and WAG-9 locos are manufactured. Heavy Machine Shop : - Heavy Machine Shop undertakes the machining of components for loco production as well as meeting the spares required for zonal railways such as suspension tube , 3-phase Stator for WAG 9 & WAP 5 locos, Hitachi Magnet Frame, Equalizer & Compensating beams etc. Machining work of Steel castings from Steel Foundry like casnub bogie bolster & side frame, brake beam, center pivots for UIC/ Casnub Bogie are also done in HMS. Smithy & Forge shop : - SFS undertakes fabrication of End structure, Head stock of WAG-7 loco, forging of small component of loco assembly, assembly of casnub bogie. Light Machine Shop : - LMS manufactures small components like various types of pins, bushes, traction motor blower holding plates etc. to meet the requirement of loco production as well as spares required for zonal railways. Tool Room : - Tool Rooms supplies toolings , gauges, jigs and fixtures for production requirements of various shops and also carries out calibration of various gauges, fixtures, instruments etc. to meet the ISO requirements. Heat Treatment shop : - Heat Treatment Shops undertakes heat treatment of bogies manufactured in Loco Shops and other items e.g. Magnet Frame, Equalizer, Compensating Beams etc. manufactured in Heavy machine shop. Machinery and Plant Procurement : - MPP & M&P section plans for procurement and commissioning of M & Ps required for production of components of different types of locos and spares in loco works as well as M&Ps for Steel Foundry, Hospital, Central Power House, etc. Transport Shop (TPT) : - Transport shop maintains all road vehicles consisting of passenger vehicles like cars, Jeeps, Mini Buses and industrials vehicles like Truck, forklift, Dumpers, tractors, Platform Trucks/Listers sky lifts for movement of material.

ELECTRIC LOCO FABRICATION SHOP-17 Fabrication Of Different Parts • Fabrication Of Head Stock (2 Nos.) • Fabrication Of Central Under Frame (1 Nos.) • Fabrication Of Bolsters (2 Nos.) • Fabrication Of Central Sill (1 Nos.) • Fabrication Of Side Sill (2 Nos.) Machines used in this shop are- THE OXY-ACETELINE CUTTING MACHINE THE LASER CUTTING MACHINE Both machines are automated so they are C.N.C.(Computer numerical control) operated.The operators receive the drawings of the plate to be manufactured, then they draw the diagram using CNC programme with the help of AUTO CAD . In oxy- accetylene cutting LPG & 2type of O2 -(1)Heating O2 – for making initial hole in a job for start cutting (2)Pressure O2 – after making through hole, pressurised O2 is used to cut the job. Kerf- It is cutting allowance given to the job.It depends upon thickness of the job. Some images of the cutting operation

27. 05. ELECTRIC LOCO BOGIE-05(ELB-05): USD POSITION OF BOGIE Here bogie frame parts are assembled and joined by welding. Then mountings are being mounted on the bogie frame by RWU(Right Way Up) & UDS(UP SIDE DOWN) ways. Scaling on the bogie is done from RWU position.

28. 06. HEAVY MACHINE SHOP-08 (HMS-08): MAINLY PRODUCED – 1. Magnet Frame : o prevent loosening of MP and CP coils the dia of fixing hole is reduced. The assembly of End frame with magnet frame is also checked using punching marks. 2. 29. 07. ELECTRIC LOCO FABRICATION-12 (ELF-12): THE MAIN OPERATIONS DONE IN THE ELF-12 SHOP ARE- 1.THE FITTING OF THE SHELL ON THE CENTRE UNDER FRAME 2.THE WELDING IS MMAW . BASICALLY, IN ELF-12 THE MANUFACTURING OF THE WAP-5 IS DONE .THIS LOCO HAS 2 AXELS . BASICALY ,THIS WORKSHOP IS SPECIFIC FOR ONLY THIS TYPE OF LOCOS. WITH THIS THE DICTRIBUTION OF THE JOB IS DONE AND THE EFFICIENCY WILL INCREASE THE PRODUCTION COST WILL DECREASE.

30. 08. ELECTRIC LOCO ASSEMBLY (ELA-16): In this shop the full assembly of the locomotive is done .The upper part is joined here . Here work has been done in two ways- ➢ Mechanical work ➢ Electrical work In mechanical basically following assemblies are done ➢ Buffer fitment ➢ Window fitment ➢ Transformer fitment ➢ Pipeline fitment ➢ Final wheeling on Motor bogie ➢ Front glass, final window fitment, door fitment& other various operations are done. ➢ Assembly of a lot of parts The roof top

31. 09. TOOL ROOM – 52: TOOL ROOM IS NOT BASICALLY A PRODUCTION UNIT FOR RAILWAYS. THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE: TOOLS ARE MADE UP & DAMAGED TOOLS ARE REPAIRED BASIC MACHINING OPERATIONS ARE CARRIED OUT ➢ LATHE OPERATION ➢ FITTING ➢ MACHINING ➢ REPAIRING ➢ MILLING SMALL COMPONENTS MANUFACTURED IN TOOL ROOM: HOLDER, FORK HEAD,SUPPORT,SUSPENSION EYE SUSPENSION PLATE GUIDE PLATE,AXLE HOLDER, AXLE GUIDE BEARING, HOLDERSEAL PLATE,SUSPENSION EYE ,SUSPENSION PLATE ,WEB Tool Rooms supplies toolings , gauges, jigs and fixtures for production requirements of various shops and also carries out calibration of various gauges, fixtures, instruments etc. to meet the ISO requirements. Initially state of art 3-phase high HP locomotive with regenerative breaking of 6000 HP (WAG-9) electric locomotive will be turned out. Subsequently, the infrastructural facilities shall be utilized for the production of 9000 HP locomotives in future. ➢ Centre of excellence for design , development & evaluation of advanced technology system for electrical rolling stock. The purpose of establishing the Centre of Excellence is to develop capability for designing ,development and evaluation of advanced technology systems for Electric Rolling Stock. The idea is to become a technology exporter from present status of technology importer in Rolling Stock equipment. The main benefit that will accrue from this project is that we shall become self-reliant in the field of development of Electric Rolling Stock equipment which will come in a big way not only for the domestic requirement of adoption of new technology in rolling stock but we shall be in a position to cater to the emerging world market as per the customized requirement of different countries.

35. CONCLUSION : - The four weeks of training at Chittaranjan locomotive works has greatly benefited me in several ways. I have witnessed the immense power of technology and how it can be put to productive purposes for the benefit of mankind. I also became aware of my role as a Mechanical Engineer in making this possible. During my stint at Chittaranjan locomotive works, I have learnt several things besides engineering which include, but are not limited to the working of a giant organization, interaction and communication skills, analytical skills, importance of safety in industry, time management and the most important fact that no work is small. The training has also inculcated in me professionalism and dedication to work. No textbook would have been able to do all this just within a span of four weeks.
