INFERRING:
Whatisinferring?
Inferringistheprocessofusingcontextclues, backgroundknowledge, and logicalreasoningtodrawconclusionsormake
educatedguessesaboutinformationthatisnotexplicitlystated. Itinvolvesusingtheavailableinformationtomakean
informedassumptionaboutsomethingthatisnotexplicitlystatedorunderstood. In otherwords, whenyouinfer, youuse
evidenceand reasoningtocome up witha conclusionthatmaynotbe directlystatedorevident. Inferringisanimportant
readingand criticalthinkingskillthathelpsreaderstobetterunderstandthetextand makedeeperconnectionstothe
material. Itisusedin variouscontexts, suchas readingcomprehension, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpreting
data.
