6 Collaborative Vs. Cooperative Learning Cooperation Collaboration Begins with mutual respect Begins with mutual trust Requires transparency Requires vulnerability Includes shared goals Includes share values Independent Interdependent Short-term Long-term Sharing of ideas with the group Generating entirely new ideas together

Both cooperation and collaboration are vital for creative work. Collaboration – Cooperation = Groupthink, but Cooperation – Collaboration = Disunity 7 Collaboration + Cooperation = Deeper work Collaboration + Cooperation = More innovation Collaboration + Cooperation = Better Quality

Cooperative learning groups may be used to teach specific content (formal cooperative learning groups), to ensure active cognitive processing of information during a lecture or demonstration (informal cooperative learning groups), and to provide long-term support and assistance for academic progress (cooperative base groups) Is the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other's learning Within cooperative learning groups students discuss the material to be learned with each other, help and assist each other to understand it, and encourage each other to work hard. 8 Cooperative Learning

Cooperative Learning is Teacher-centered 9 Group Activity – Describe the 21 st Century Learners The teacher maintains complete control of the class, even though the students work in groups to accomplish a goal. The teacher provides additional articles for students to read and analyze. The group present their results to the whole class and discuss their reasoning. The teacher maintains control of the process at each stage of the student work. To help facilitate the group interactions, the teacher might use specific structures.

Is an umbrella term for a variety of educational approaches involving joint intellectual effort by students, or students and teachers together. Usually, students are working in groups of two or more, mutually searching for understanding, solutions, or meanings, or creating a product. Collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is a naturally social act in which the participants talk among themselves (Gerlach, 1994). It is through the talk that learning occurs." 10 Collaborative Learning

Collaborative Learning is Student-centered 11 Group Presentation Activity Strong Leadership: Leaders set the tone for employee behavior, helping to encourage and guide collaboration within and between teams. They also communicate expectations for teamwork and coach individuals to be better at working together Consistent, United, and Enthusiastic Effort: The u nited effort is important because if any person or team loses enthusiasm for the shared goal or begins to give less than their best effort, the whole organization can suffer. Everyone working together as a team from the beginning to the end of each task, project, or quarter ensures a consistent effort Shared Resources: Resources such as time, ideas, and experience are also routinely shared in a truly collaborative work environment. No one ever said it was easy to share resources, especially when you feel time-constrained. However, when resources are shared rather than consistently held close to the vest, the whole team ultimately benefits. Clearly Defined Roles for Subgroups: When each team has clarity about their role in helping the company achieve its goals, collaboration is not only more possible, but is likely to be more rewarding for everyone involved Effective and Frequent Communication: No person or team within the organization can be an island, and frequent communication is what helps people learn, make progress on key projects, and overcome obstacles. When everyone is communicating, each person has the chance to share their ideas and talents.

Importance of collaborative learning in creating a positive atmosphere in the classroom 12

Builds more positive heterogeneous relationships Encourages alternate student assessment techniques Fosters and develops interpersonal relationships Modelling problem solving techniques by students' peers Students are taught how to criticize ideas, not people Sets high expectations for students and teachers Promotes higher achievement and class attendance Students stay on task more and are less disruptive Students develop responsibility for each other Encourages student responsibility for learning 13

11 . Greater ability of students to view situations from others' perspectives (development of empathy) 12. Creates a stronger social support system 13. Creates a more positive attitude toward teachers, principals and other school personnel by students and creates a more positive attitude by teachers toward their students 14. Addresses learning style differences among students 15. Promotes innovation in teaching and classroom techniques 16. Classroom anxiety is significantly reduced 17. Test anxiety is significantly reduced 18. Classroom resembles real life social and employment situations 19. Students practice modeling societal and work related roles 20 . Anticipates problem and not afraid to seek for constructive help. 14

Tips to Engage Students in the Collaborative Learning Activities 15

Help students understand the benefits of collaboration and what successful collaboration looks like. 16

Guide students through the stages of team building (forming, storming, norming, and performing). 17

Give students time and opportunities within the activity to develop leadership, decision-making, trust-building, communication, and conflict-management skills. 18

Establish expectations and norms for working together. 19

Design, or have students design, protocols for handling conflict disagreement so they can resolve issues within their teams. 20

21 Significance of using the core values of collaboration in facilitating learning

Accountability Is the primary practice that will make collaboration a success. After all, if no one is held accountable for the practices that emerge from the collaborative group, then collaboration was a complete failure. Authenticity Originality of ideas, authentic activities allow for use of higher-order thinking skills, so students engage with more of their brains, and engage their brains in different ways . Commitment Dedication and efforts in the team’s success is contagious; others will follow and may contribute to the success and learning of every member of the group. 22 Give and Take Giving to succeed, students share their knowledge, expertise and support without calculating how it might benefit them to do so. Diversity Every student is a unique learner. Everyone has their own specialty or ability that he/she can contribute to the team’s success, and therefore, every student will benefit by adapting new ideas or concepts. Respect It is respect that opens space for the development of trust and learning. If there is respect among each member of the group, collaboration will be smooth, and learning will take place.

Thank You! 23
