What is Waste Collection? Waste collection is a part of the process of waste management. It is the transfer of solid waste from the point of use and disposal to the point of treatment or landfill. Waste collection also includes the curbside collection of recyclable materials that technically are not waste, as part of a municipal landfill diversion program.

Types of solid waste in Dhaka The main types of solid waste in Dhaka city’s are: 1. Household Waste 2. Commercial Waste 3. Medical Waste 1. Dhaka city corporation. 2. Some private society Who collect solid waste in Dhaka city?

Classification of collection s ystem Based on the availability of service 1 . House-to-House: Waste collectors visit each individual house to collect garbage. The user generally pays a fee for this service . 2. Community Bins: Users bring their garbage to community bins that are placed at fixed points in a neighborhood or locality. MSW is picked up by the municipality, or its designate, according to a set schedule.

Classification of collection system 3. Curbside Pick-Up: Users leave their garbage directly outside their homes according to a garbage pick-up schedule set with the local authorities (secondary house-to-house collectors not typical). 4. Self Delivered: Generators deliver the waste directly to disposal sites or transfer stations, or hire third-party operators (or the municipality ).

Collection Method Based on mode of operation: 1. Hauled Container System 2. Stationary Container system

Hauled Container System An empty storage container (Known as a drop-off box) is hauled to the storage site to replace the container that is full of waste , which is then hauled to the processing point , transfer station or disposal site.

Hauled Container System 1 2 3 4 5 Disposal Site Number of Containers = n Example below: n=5 The number of drive between containers = n-1 Example: dbc = 4

Stationary Container S ystem Stationary Containers : In this system, containers used for the storage of waste remain at the point of collection. The collection vehicles generally stop alongside the storage containers, and collection crews load the waste from the storage containers into the collection vehicles and then transport the waste to the processing, transfer or disposal site.

Problems in Collection System Labor 1.Labor unskilled 2.High turn-over rates 3.Few prospects for mechanical replacement of manual labor 4.Injuries and poor working conditions 5.Labor intensive 6.Limited career opportunities

Problems in Collection System Vehicle Problem Falls off trucks Hit by cars Inappropriate disposal of wastes Lifting injuries

Problems in Collection System On Street Container & Passengers Problem

Some Exploration Collection of recyclables, yard waste, special wastes Yard waste containers - bagged material must be debagged prior to composting Automated collection Development of efficient routes Vehicle weight restrictions Vehicle turning radius and clearance

Last word To make our city clean & fresh we have to make sure a good waste collection system for our beloved city.
